  • D180 Leather Cleaner & Conditioner and Meguiars D181 Leather Cleaner

Want some opinions on both these products. How does D180 Leather Cleaner & Conditioner compare to something like Mothers VLR and how does Meguiars D181 Leather Cleaner compare to Ultima Shampoo Gel? I like both these products and want to see what Meg products compare. I don't really like using APC on leather bc it leaves a dry sticky feeling, where as Ultima leaves leather soft and supple, does D181 do the same? Can you use D180 on vinyl and plastic too?

    Thanx.

Re: D180 Leather Cleaner & Conditioner and Meguiars D181 Leather Cleaner

D180 will not leave a sticky feel, nor will it leave an overly glossy finish. It's a light cleaner with excellent conditioning properties that is very easy and straighforward to use. D181 is an extremely effective leather cleaner, a bit more potent than even our newest Gold Class Leather & Vinyl Cleaner, and it will do an amazing job of deep cleaning even the dirtiest leather.

We can't directly addresses comparisons between these and the products you specifically mentioned as our targets when developing a product are more about making them do what we want them to do rather than just putting them up against another product. I can tell you from personal experience, however, that Gold Class Leather & Vinyl Cleaner blew away the competition in every demo I've done for major retailers. So much so that I was a bit irritated at how effectively it cleaned the leather in a 10 year old Mercedes E-Class wagon; where the other two very well known and popular cleaners did very little on their test spots, this consumer product of ours left such a clean area that I had to clean the entire interior - I couldn't give the car back to the owner with just a spotlessly clean stripe on the back seat! And as just mentioned, D181 is a bit stronger than that.

Finally, yes, you can use either on vinyl as well as leather. As always, we're fine with you using our leather products on vinyl, but we don't recommend our vinyl products for use on leather. The coating used on automotive leather is highly specialized and as such requires a bit more of specialized product to properly (and safely) clean and condition it.

Thanx for the response Mike, good info. Looks like I will pick up both in the future.

Finally got use some D180 today and love it! Left a nice feel and smell, cleaned well, if I need a little more oomph I switched from MF to Terry, I like that its creamy and doesn't run. Overall I am happy with it.

Mike, you last sentence is interesting. Can you elaborate on or provide a link to a thread I may have missed on leather coatings pertaining to real world cars (sub 50K sales price) and how D180 is able to penetrate this barrier to condition the coated leather? Just curious... I've been holding back on picking up a dedicated leather cleaner/conditioner.

I've been living with APC when needed for cleaning and mainly just warm damp cloth to dust and keep saturation in the leather. And that's mainly the advice I got also.

Curious as to D180's benefits beyond the normal 'talking points'.

          Thanks as always.
