  • M205, rotary vs Porter Cable

Will M205 (using a Porter Cable) finish better with less chances of faint holograms than a rotary on soft, dark colored paint ?

Anyone know how many microns of paint would be removed using a foam polishing pad (and Porter Cable) on soft paint ?

It appears that rotarys are said to give you the best finish. I would say there is definitely a greater chance for holograms with the rotary. I don't think you could tell the difference to be honest.

Is your paint like super super soft or something? I don't think m205 on a polishing pad on a D/A is gonna remove much at all.

      In a word>yes.

Think about the action of a DA vs Rotary. A rotary is all one direction, round and round. Whereas a DA is, for lack of another word, is random.

205 (or U Polish) with a polishing pad works wonders.

As always, least agressive method first along with a test area.

Can't help ya with how much paint will be removed. Others may have that answer.

A DA can not create a hologram like swirl mark that a rotary can, but it can create a very light hazing that a rotary generally won't. If you're looking to do final finish polishing on very soft paint, we'd suggest using a finishing pad rather than a polishing pad with the M205. As for how much paint you'll remove, it's almost impossible to give any sort of meaningful number: what speed are you running at; how much pressure are you applying; how long are you buffing; how is the paint responding; etc. In a nutshell, though, you shouldn't worry at all about paint removal with M205 on a DA and a finishing pad. You'd likely have to use it many, many times before you could even start to see any sort of measurable difference in paint thickness.
