  • What will hold up best for winter ......

I will polish/clean with #6 , then go to either M16 or UW . I will probably maintain with #34 or UQW & UQD.

Because of winter being a B*TCH here in Wisconsin I have no choice but to use car washes , then I come home into the heated garage and do a light wash / wipe down and then maintain. So keep in mind it will be exposed to harsh detergents from washes .

    Thank you
    Mike

You could do what I did and put down a coat of UW then a coat of M16. I don't know if they really "layer" like you would hope, but I figured what the heck. As far as which lasts longer, I really have no idea, they are dramatically different waxes. I can't even venture a guess as to which is more durable, because I'm sure it depends a lot on your individual surface that you're applying it to, etc.

Either is a great choice for some winter protection. If you have a heated garage you could probably catch a warm enough day to wax again....I've waxed when it's 35F without too much trouble.

      Fallz,

You do have a couple of options. If the car washes have manual bays with doors, then take your bucket(s) with grit guards, use your own soap and your own wash mitt. Either fill your bucket (screw lid required) at home with hot water or use the car wash's water. Mix your soap at the wash and hand wash your car, then follow with a dry using Ultimate Quik Wax. You're out of luck when the washes close due to temperature.

The other option is Optimum No Rinse or the soon to be released Meguiar's product, "Rinse Free Express Wash". Greg or Shawn will explain the use of no rinse products, they have worked on the technique with success.

Depending on the distance from the car wash to your home, you are better off getting as much done at the wash as possible before heading home as the journey will pick up more dirt/snow/ice/salt. Or doing as much as possible in your heat garage is most desirable.

That kind of was my concern was being able to layer and re-wax during winter and having bonding issues . Its a big black truck so it's a little time consuming and don't want to waste a step....lol.

I agree, use the coin-ops water, but bring your own buckets and mitts to use. I tend to go later at night so there are not as many people as I may take longer than the average person. Also if the owner is walking around and questioning you using your own bucket, remind them that you are still a paying customer using their water.

As for maintenance, I will usually just wax a time or two in the winter. I mean if you have a heated garage it really shouldn't be an issue, but you might not be doing a full blown detail. I personally think just applying a wax is fine and while it might not be perfect you just need to make it to that early spring detail.

Keeping the car as clean as you can is about all you can hope for during the winter. No use worrying too much about the paint till Spring. It's not worth risking your health over paint work.

Totally agree! I still think it's more important to get undercarriage washed to get rid of road salt. Wash salt of the paint and worry about it in spring. Looks like everyone want's a shiny car but undercarriage gets ignored. Just my 2 cents

My winter protection is Ultimate Paste Wax and M16 Professional Paste Wax on top.
