  • skip d301?

I got rid of the swirls and scratches with the d300(with correct pads and backing plate), but didn't have the d301 so just used #7 followed with my fav LSP.black small SUV, Charged for the detail, now i feel guilty i never used 301, did i really "f" up or is 301 just for the showroom type finish? any thoughts on 300 to LSP. gotta do another tomorrow without 301 (its in the mail).

addition, it wasn't an absoulte flawless finish but they never wanted showroom just swirl and scratch removal, they were happy with the result.

Its a nice product that imparts a nice gloss to the finish.

As long as you explain your process and work to the customer, and arent hiding something, then it is ok.

I did just the opposite last night - the sides of the SUV I'm doing are in very nice shape, I did it a few years ago and it lives mostly indoors, so I skipping the D300 and went right to the D301 (skipped pink, did grey) and while you -can- tell the difference, the end result is just so nice that I'm quite pleased. There wasn't really anything I found that needed 'fixing', so I 'polished' it.

from what i have read i have seen people gp from D300 right to LSP like you did and it looked great. so from what i have seen so far with this system what you did was fine. like you said they did not want a showroom finish and the way i have seen D300 finishes then they got what they asked for. i still have not had a chance to use my MF system yet but i am just dieing to do it

              Re: skip d301?

D300 alone is great at correcting defects but offers no protection so at minimum you'll need to apply a coat of a wax after. There are times, however, when some hazing will be present following D300 (this is more a by product of DA buffing rather than the product itself) and D301 will both remove the haze and leave wax protection behind at the same time.

So while that sounds like you should use D301 after D300 (they are part of a system, after all) there are alternatives. If there's truly zero haze after D300 and you want to go straight to LSP, fine. If there's a bit of haze but you'd rather use M205 on a foam pad to remove it and then apply your LSP, fine. If there's zero haze and you'd rather just apply a pure polish and then LSP (which is what you did), that's fine too.

It may be part of a system, and a system can make it very easy for a novice user or a volume production facility to achieve excellent results in just two steps, but that doesn't mean you should never step outside the box and experiment a bit.
