  • Microfiber Pad Toast After 1/2 Vehicle

I used this compounding pad for a bit more than 1/2 a vehicle before it looked like this. I am using a Griot's DA on speed 5 and compressed air to clean the pad after each section, sometimes after two sections. I'm using D300, and I'm working about 12"x12" sections. Any ideas?

Wow looks like all the fibers in the center region disappeared! I'm curious to hear what Meguiar's has to say about this. Hope it gets resolved!

I believe you speed is too high, going off the opm numbers from this thread http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48156 the griots DA should be on speed ~4.0-4.5 for the 4800 OPMs. Looking at Nick Chapmans review he said he preferred speeds 3.0-4.0. Search through the reviews of the system I remember someone mentioning a removal of all the fibers in the center of the pad but couldnt find it and don't remember what they believed the cause to be.

How much pressure were you using? How long did you work each section? Number of passes? Did you notice any excess heat build up, the center of the pad doesn't look quite as white? Which backing plate were you using?

          +1

Griot's DA is more powerful than other polishers in its class and it looks like speed 3.5 is about 4,800 opm. Those MF discs are really designed to work in specific range and with proper backing plates (micro-hook technology).

I was using the BP that was included with the kit. I was making 4 passes with moderate pressure. No heat build up on the pad or backing plate. The center of the pad doesn't look as white because there are no fibers left. It's just the material the fibers are attached to.

According to that thread, the GG should be at 3.5, not 4 - 4.5. I was running it on 5, which according to that chart was 6,000 OPMS.

Lesson learned here? Don't run the MF pads at 6,000 OPMs. That was a cheap $5 lesson. I'll be using much lower speeds from now on.
