Re: Review: Meguiar's DA Microfiber System

Holy Cow Chad....amazing. Loved your presentations, efforts and most of all the results. I'm signed up for the class on this new system here in Arizona. I am REALLY looking forward to it now after this presentation.

Great job. I was actually wondering where you've been lately. Good to see you ((back)) on the board.

Thanks guys! Tim are we going to be seeing a review from you in the near future on this system? You reviews have always been top notch and I can't wait to see it if you have one coming.... Glad to be back Don! I've been lurking around but since the majority of the work I've been doing was utilizing this system, I was unable to share any of it.

I can respect that Chad. I admire your work, honesty and posts.
Question: the tape you use. Is it a painters tape? I ask because it looks as if it adheres better than the 3M blue painters tape that I have been using. When I buff near the edges, it has a tendency to pull up the tape easily. I was curious if you found the same thing with whatever tape you use or does it stick a bit better? I know any "aggressive" buffing will have the same lifting results, but it just appeared to me that what you were using stuck a bit better?

Re: Review: Meguiar's DA Microfiber System

Chad can correct us if we're mistaken here, but that tan colored tape he's using may well be our own Professional Masking Tape. Taking advantage of our relationship with 3M, we developed a masking tape that's better suited to detailing than their much used blue painter's tape. That blue tape is a bit pricey and designed to allow for a clean edge when spraying fresh paint, while being safe for use on recently sprayed paint. That's sort of overkill for detailing, really. Plus, since it's safe for use on fresh paint, the adhesive isn't all that strong.

The Meguiar's branded tape will stick better to trim and withstand the impact of the buffing pad better but still be safe on that trim and cured paint, without leaving residue behind.

Re: Review: Meguiar's DA Microfiber System

Thank You Mike for the return post. I had thought that it might be Mequiars tape, but thought I'd pose the question. I just wasn't sure. You are obsolutely correct about the blue tape being a bit pricey....hence one of the other concerns I had. I just noticed right off that it seemed to adhere better than what I had experienced with the blue tape which at times caused me some frustration.

Well, with that said, another item to add to the Meguiars arsenal!

              Thanks again Mike.

Re: Review: Meguiar's DA Microfiber System

Yes Mike is correct and I use the Meguiar's brand tape for 95% of my masking. The other stuff is the 3M Fine Line tape and I only use it for certain areas. It's expensive, but it's priceless on certain areas IMO. The narrow sizes (1/4" and 1/8") are invaluable on some areas. It's also VERY easy to work with and bends around corners with ease. When polishing over the tape it doesn't have the tendency to pull the adhesive out onto the paint either, which you may have experienced before with the normal masking tape. Example: On these particular door handles there is a thin rubber gasket that could potentially be damaged during polishing, and the tape also prevents product from getting in between the gasket and paint. This can be time consuming to get out. I also hand polished with M105 behind the handle and I can assure you polish would have gotten down in there had I not taped it off. I also use it to tape of clear film edges. As well as sharp body lines during sanding and aggressive compounding. My old man uses it to paint, which was how a learned of it....man he used to get mad when I used that stuff! Try it out! Your local paint and supply store should have it.

The Nissan pics ought to be on the bottles as before/after shots!

I know you had the write-ups and videos ready to go... probably one of the first guys to do so. I really appreciate the honesty, too. Since this write-up, I suspect you're zeroing in on how to minimize hazing.

I'm definitely having better results the more I use it now and it's become clear just how important it is to be consistentin your technique once you have it dialed in.

Works extremely well with M105 too!
