  • M01 + Hand + Paint = Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Went to my local PBE store today to pick up some M01 because I wanted to try it with the drill attachment in the headlight restoration kit.

I shook the bottle, opened it up, poured some onto the attachment and buffed away on the headlight. I figured there would be some splatter and decided to scatter some microfibers over the most forward half of the hood.

I did not realize how much splatter there would be though and to my dismay, found hundreds of little dots of M01 all over the hood without any microfibers.

Not thinking, I simply went to wipe them off and stopped after about half way through wiping. I began to think that this product uses diminishing abrasives which means I am simply wiping large abrasives across my hood. I went to peak in the sun and darn near fainted. SWIRLS GALORE!!!!!!

Anyway, to any noob looking to try the Mirror Glaze Diminishing Abrasive products, don't. You will not be happy with the results. Stick with the new SMAT products as they are awesome. Swirlx saved my life on this one.

I realize that this thread may be ineffective without pics, but I was so worried about removing the swirls, the thought of taking pictures slipped my mind.

When used properly, DAT products such as M80 Speed Glaze or M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish can produce great results.

Even someone who is new to machine polishing can get great results with a DAT product such as M80.

I meant anyone looking to use M01 or any other DAT heavy cleaner by hand should definitely think twice.

By machine, absolutely go for it but my warning was for using M01, M04, M95, etc. by hand

It should be noted here that M01 Medium Cut Cleaner is really part of an old school 3 step process - M04 Heavy Cut, M01 Medium Cut, M02 Fine Cut Cleaner - and was really designed back in the days of single stage paints. While some have used M01 by hand with some success, we recommend using it by rotary machine only for best results.

We're sorry to hear that you had less than stellar results after accidentally getting M01 on your paint. We are curious about why you selected this for headlight restoration rather than M105, which is what we provide in our Pro Headlight & Spot Repair Kit.

Keep in mind, we do have DAT products that can be used by hand and deliver great results (a few are mentioned in post above) Again, a quick read of the back label will help you choose the right product for the right application

Keep in min,d the bad experience was NOT due to DAT, it was due to M01 being worked / wiped by hand when it fact it is a rotary use only product, as mentioned on the back label.

Again, we are sorry for your bad experience.

I knew that UC was not designed for use with a rotary and was not sure if would dry up too quickly if I bumped the speed up to high setting on the drill. I was also working on my mom's car and wanted to get the job done that day. I decided to run down to my local PBE store and all they had in terms of Mirror Glaze paint cleaners were M01 and M09. Thats why I decided to pick up the M01. I was in a rush unfortuantely as the day was withering away. Thats what happens when you rush.

Don't know how to pull out certain parts of a post so here goes some copy and paste.

I understand that there are DAT products in the Mirror Glaze line that will produce great results even when used by hand. Tuck mentioned them before and the original Scratchx (even though a consumer product) also used DAT which people used to great success.

I also know that the cause of the misfortune was due to the fact that hand power can not produce the heat or power necessary to break down these abrasives. I read the back label and saw that which should have triggered me to stop there.

You have no reason to apologize. I used the products incorrectly and using even the best product incorrectly will yield less than favorable results.

Thanks for all of your responses! Any ideas on what to do with my bottle of M01? Besides of course putting a label on it saying "DON'T USE BY HAND!"
