A product dedicated to the job is usually the best product. So a dedicated cleaner will usually clean better than an AIO, a pure polish will polish better, and a wax/sealant will last and protect better.

However, that brings in an extra step or two, and esp on a daily driver, time is also a factor. So yes, there is a bit of a compromise.

As to the other part of your question, Meguiars always says that their products can be mixed and matched with no problems, and that your two layers of 'protection' can come from any of the products.

Or SwirlX it has only cleaners in it and polishing oils then top with wax/sealant.

For one more clarification has SwirlX replaced deep crystal #1 cleaner.

I get the cleaner part before the application of #21 and not after, but are you going to get the same superior protection from a sealant like #21 if you apply it over a product that also contains wax such as colorx? If ultimate protection was your goal wouldn't just 2 thin coats of #21 be better after say using a paint cleaner/polish (M205)? Or possible #21 followed up with something like a pure wax such as #26 for a different look??

One often reads on the internet the maxim "Never apply a synthetic sealant on top of a wax." This may be a good general rule; but it does not apply to all synthetic sealants. There are exceptions, and M21 appears to be one of them. MOL members have been applying M21 (and NXT) on top of cleaner waxes for years, and they have not observed a reduction in protection and durability. M21 is not finnicky when it comes to bonding to to the paint surface.

As Mat has noted, some folks like using a cleaner wax because it eliminates a step in the polishing and waxing process and therefore saves a little time and energy. A cleaner-polish followed by two coats of M21 would no doubt be superior to a cleaner wax followed by a coat of M21, but I suspect that the superiority of the former lies more in the fact that a dedicated cleaner-polish will do a better job at cleaning and polishing the paint surface than a cleaner wax will do.

At this point we are talking about differences that are probably unmeasurable and most certainly inconsequential. Even if two coats of M21 is more durable than a coat of ColorX and a coat of M21, what are we talking about? minutes? hours? days? What is important is to adopt a regular detailing regimen that renders these kinds of worries irrelevant.
