  • Meguiar's M105 Flashing Problems

    Hey Guys and Gals,

First time poster but have been reading through these threads like crazy.

I wanted to ask you guys a question about meguiars m105 compound. I contacted meguiars CS and told them what type of car I had (2006 White GMC yukon) and asked them about polishing and finishing. I have detailed several cars in the past with my makita rotary but as a hobby or for friends. The condition of the yukon is fairly decent no major scratches, just the normal car wash markings (this is my wife's car). Some scratches a little deeper than others but you can't feel them with a fingernail.

They recommended their m105 with an 8000 pad. So yesterday I go to work on the car with a brand new 8000 pad and the m105 in hand (shaken for around 3 minutes thanks to fellow autopians recommendations). Treated the pad with QD before I started.

The major problem is the constant flashing of the product before it gets the job done. I have tried everything that I have read on here, apply 105 directly to panel, directly to pad, add QD to pad, put 4 pea sized drops to pad, clean pad with brush after every pass, and the 105 always flashes. I feel like it's taking me twice as long to get through the car.

What do you guys think? Should I be using a different pad? On the back of the bottle meguiars recommends the 5000 wool pad. But I think it's too aggressive for the type of correction I need. But not sure.

    Any thoughts?

    Re: Meguiar's M105 Flashing Problems

On the back of the 105 bottle, does it say it can be used with a DA? If not, it's the "OLD" version of 105. The "NEW" 105 is just starting to hit the "on-line" stores. It will not "flash" so quickly, per Meguiar's.

I just made a huge order to ADS on the 23rd, that came in today. I didn't think the "NEW" 105 would be out until late Jan. or Feb.. I was wrong, it just got updated on ADS's on-line store that the "NEW" 105 was ready for the ordering.

Grrrr... I was only using the "OLD" 105 by hand in tight areas of cars and needed a little more to hold me over until the "NEW" 105 came out. Yes, I bought a Quart of "OLD" 105. I hope Rick at ADS will exchange it.

If memory serves, I believe a MOL member "spritzed" water on the area he was working in to keep it workable.....

      The new M105 should help.

Here is a link to a thread about this topic.

Below is Mike Pennington's post (#16) from that thread.

        Using a wetting-agent with M105 and M205

There has been some discussions regarding using a supplemental wetting agent to assist in the buffing process. We thought we would share our thoughts.

We know that optimum buffing results are achieved with the right amount of lubrication and when the paint surface/pad are kept clean using the right methods. We also know that ambient temperature and humidity play a role in the intended performance of all products.

We have observed the three main reasons someone might be inclined to use a supplemental wetting agent:
        • The Mfg recommends it as part of the process
        • The climate is working against desired or optimal polishing performance
        • The user prefers an adjusted buffing cycle
With that said, all of our formulations are designed and developed to perform best when used without any type of supplemental wetting agent. (supplemental wetting agent would be considered water or any other chemicals that are sprayed into the pad or onto the surface while buffing).

While we know people use water and other liquids to do this, we do not recommend or advocate this as a process for best results. Best results can most often be achieved without a supplemental wetting agent by applying our machine polishing products, as prescribed, in the directions which are on the product label.

We know there are other Mfg’s recommending supplemental wetting agents in their process, so if you try this technique to experiment, we would highly recommend only using M34 Final Inspection for the wetting agent.

M34 Final Inspection will have the least effect on our formulations from an overall performance stand point. M34 Final Inspection is our recommended product for priming new or dry buffing pads, thus our product development and pre-market testing supports this use.

M34 Final Inspection is validated as the most compatible with our machine polishing products, while water or other supplemental wetting agents have not been validated.

        We hope this helps...

First, like SHYNEMAN123 asked, how big of an area are you trying to work?

Keep your work area no larger than 2' square and anytime you start to run into problems like you describe try shrinking the size of your work area down.

As for the wool pad, the polishing pad is pretty gentle as far as pad go.

Switching to a wool pad will dramatically increase the cutting power of any product including M105 but know that if you temper your pressure and how long you buff you can really control the amount of cut and best of all it will finish out very, very nice.

If you have a wool cutting pad, even a wool finishing pad, clean it really really well and do a test spot using this. If you're getting the results you want you can cut out all the defects with the wool pad and then come back and do the finishing work with the foam pad although in a perfect world you would finish out using some M205 with a foam pad.

Again, even though M105 is an aggressive product you can greatly control the cut just by your pressure and buffing time, so do a test spot and come back and let us know what you see.
