  • what does M80 do for you?

Maybe im just not seeing it cuz its the first time using M80 but so far i am in my polish phase of my wash cycle (wash, clay, polish, nxt)
and i have polished my hood roof and trunk with m80 and i dont think i saw any real differnce, in regards to very light swirls, or scratches.
i followed the instructions from mike's links,

what am i supposed to see from m80
    thanks

M80 is a paint cleaner with some polishing oils in it. It should remove some defects and surface imperfections (hazing, scratches, marring, etc.). On the flip side though, it is only a level 4 in abrasives out of a 12 point scale. So even sometimes with the right technique and tools, M80 just isn't abrasive enough.

Try stepping up to M83 and see what that gets you.

What are you using the M80 with? DA? Rotary? Hand?

      What pads?

More importantly, which car are you using it on? I see a new Mercedes in your sig. I've never had great sucess with M80 on the new Mercedes.

the 8006, DA at the 4-5 setting that mike showed in one his how to topics

i buff for a few minutes untill the m80 becomes really thin, and easily wipes off by hand with a MF

i dont have many major stratches except that one on my rear quarter that u can see on my other thread
          otherwise, minor swirls

Re: what does M80 do for you?

              Is your pad rotating?

Anywhere a a raised body line or edge this will concentrate the pressure to a small area of the pad and keep it from rotating thus no paint removal.

DA's work best on flat surfaces and you still have to hold the pad completely flat and see it rotating under pressure.

In most cases, when it comes to the initial swirl and scratch removal you want to apply as much pressure as you can and still see the pad rotating. After the initial cut then you want to lessen your pressure, remember we're polishing paint, not grinding steel.

Re: what does M80 do for you?

i just tried some scratchx on an area on the trunk that had some swirls, used the DA, and still looks essentailly the same.

would using a MF bonnet on an old pad to remove the products make a differnece, ( that will be a pain to go back and forth)

why dont you upgrade to a more agressive combo like #83 on a cutting pad? or even #105 on a polishing or cutting pad?

I'd use the 8006 yellow polishing pad with #83 personally, and leave the 9006 for finishing duties with either #80, or now the #205.

#80 I find to be an interesting product, and its one which serves quite a few uses for me ranging from finishing up after a more severe correction job, through to carrying out correction itself. We all have different tecniques when it comes to working a polish, my methods work the products for long period of time over a pretty small working area as I find this focussed effort gets me a little more in the way of correction and also an edge on finish as I am working the abrasives better...

So with #80, I tend to focus on a work area of around 1' square and work it for a good five minutes until it just starts to slightly dust (but without the product fully drying) ... This technique tends to raise eyebrows and surprise, as this low cutting finishing polish named a glaze is generating notable correction, the biggest eye opener being when it was enough to deal with light to medium swirls on Audi paintwork which here in the UK is known for being quite hard.

I imagine that the new line up, #205, will spell the end for #80 - at least in terms of forum air time, but its a product I have a bit of a soft spot for (along with its heavier cutting cousins #83, and #84).
"A thing of beauty is a joy for ever: Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness; .... "
