problem with #40

Hi all. I know there's already an active thread on #40, but I figured this is a bit of a different problem, so it deserved it's own thread.

I have plastic side view mirrors, so I decided to clean them up and make them nice again. on Sunday, I applied #40 to them. They looked great after that. my mirrors finally looked like the same colour as my car. But then yesterday, it rained. after my car was dry, i could see white blotchy spots all over them. When I applied, I made sure to buff out the excess product.

is #40 not meant for exterior use? I thought it was alright to use.

Sounds like a common problem for dressings applied to exterior trim. Not familar with 40 itself but others have found buffing the trim with a cloth once a dressing is applied seems to help it "soak in" and not bleed once rain hits.

Not really sure what caused the spots, but 40 isn't really for exterior use (you can use it, it just doesn't last so long... especially when it gets wet). You might want to check in to #38 tire and trim dressing gel. It will hold up to exterior use and weather much better.

Hey,

Some of the hard plastic mirrors, will not hold a protectant dressing very well. If it is hard, smooth plastic, I would suggest using Meguiar's PlastX. I have used this product in numerous situations and have come away impressed with it every time!!

#40 is really best used on vinyl and rubber. For exterior plastic, Meguiar's recommends,

So NXT Tech Protectant can be used on my exterior black plastic trim and rubber(weatherstripping) even though it says for interior use? If so, how well does it hold up?

Tech Protect should hold up reasonably well on the exterior, the biggest problem most people run into when applying an exterior dressing is to apply to much, then when it rains or they wash the car they see the excess removed and think all of the product came off.

Try applying sparingly using an applicator instead of applying directly onto the surface. Work in well and then remove any excess after allowing it to penetrate for a few minutes.

Thanks Mike, I just ordered #38 today after reading some threads about it. People seem to like it pretty well so I thought Id give it a try. Any tips on applying this stuff to my exterior plastics and rubber.
