I have some really nasty stuff to get rid of in the black paint of my girlfriend's car. Which paint cleaners are okay for use by hand? Are 1, 2, and 4 okay to use? What about 80, 95, and 105?

Re: Paint Cleaners
Here are some things that would help us in making a recommendation:
*first of all, pictures. You can only do so good in describing it.
*Secondly, have you washed the vehicle? Have you clayed it? You'd be surprised at how much this will affect the paint finish.
Here to help!

Re: Paint Cleaners
it's all fairly deep scratches and swirls. I have clayed the car before and used the deep crystal paint cleaner but I didn't have the time then to sit there with a tube of ScratchX for eight hours to get rid of all the swirls and scratches. Anyways, from using ScratchX on my car, I know that I'm going to need something quite a bit more agressive for her car.
and I can't really get access to take pictures right now as she is out of town...
that help any?

Re: Paint Cleaners
Sounds like you really don't have too many options if you are working by hand. Your hand can only do so much and if Scratch X can't cut it, then you are looking at either doing something via machine or maybe even 105 by hand if it is that bad?

Removing swirls and scratches by hand is very tedious and sometimes just not possible. Try a test spot and see what happens. Often a machine polisher will be required.
Keep us posted!

If I try real hard I think I might have access to a rotary tool, but I have never used one before (my Miata is just too small to warrant the need for a power tool to detail it). Should I consider using that?
PS. it's a slightly older black and decker random orbital tool, and I do have access to it.

The best solution is to obtain a Dual Action (DA) polisher like the Meg's G110 or a Porter Cable 7424. With the proper tools and products, you will be surpised just how well a DA works! Then after a person has used a DA for sometime, then it would be more appropriate to move up to a rotary polisher. Otherwise, learning to use a rotary and through incorrect technique, you may instill holograms, or worse buffer burn that requires a lot of work to remove or to repair.

Here's a thread about the differences in tools and what they can and cannot do...

which paint cleaners are okay to use with it?
In our Professional Line, these are recommended for use with a DA Polisher.
Paint Cleaners: M02
Cleaner/Polishes: M09, M80, M82, M83
Lots of people are getting great results using M105 with a DA Polisher but at this time it's not an official recommendation by Meguiar's.
M105 is also the most aggressive product we offer for use by hand on clear coat paints and it's very effective at removing scratches.
