  • #1 & #2 applied by DA polisher?

I was curious as to whether #1 or #2 could be applied by DA polisher or by hand, or if they're only supposed to be applied by rotary...

I've got a spot on the trunk of my dad's BMW Z4 (which seems to have really hard paint; 83 didn't even touch the swirls & scratches on the trunk) that I was thinking of hitting with some #1 or #2 to see if I could pull them out, but I don't have a rotary (yet) that I can work with to try to remove the scratches. Plus, I feel a little uneasy about trying to use the rotary on his car; it's still fairly new, and I've never used one before; I figure that would be a BAD car to practice on, in case I screw up and actually burn through the clear.

So, I was wondering if I could use the DA polisher or even by hand (it's not that big an area that I'm trying to fix, maybe a 6" x 6" square area with some semi-heavy scratches and what looks like bird dropping etching), so I figure if I can do it by hand with lots of passion, I'll give that a shot first.

I tried looking at the Meguiars.com to see if they said it could be applied by rotary/DA/hand like it says on the bottle, but it doesn't list it in the descriptions...

#2 can be used with the PC, but #1 (Medium Cut Cleaner) can not.

I have used #1 by hand, but it will marre the paint. Yes, the marring can be removed, but it still marres the paint.

Forgot to mention... The old #2 was a rotary only product. The new version can be used with the rotary, PC, orbital, and by hand. The instructions on the back should be clear.

When you get your rotary go yo a salvage yard . Get a old hood to practice. Better to ruin that then your dad's bmw.

Could be these swirls and scratches are too deep to safely remove. Remember sometimes even if we can completely remove a swirl or scratch that doesn't mean we should as it will leave behind a very thin area of clear coat that you're depending upon to last over the surface life of the car.

Besides that, as Chris said, #1 Medium Cut Cleaner is only for application with a rotary buffer. We reformulated #2 so that it can be used by by hand or with a dual action polisher but before using a bottle of #2 you want to read the back label and make sure it says it can be used by hand, DA Polisher and Rotary Buffer, there's always the chance you can get old stock so you want to be sure before you use it.

If you want to continue to try to remove the defect, clean your pad, insure the surface is clean and then try again and make sure you're on the 5.0 speed setting and apply as much pressure as you can while keeping the foam pad rotating on the surface, not just vibrating.

Work a small area, about 12" to 16" square.

Thanks all for the help. I'll try hitting it again with the DA polisher, and check the bottle of #2 I've got to see if it's usable with DA/Orbital or just rotary. I think it's a year old, but it may be newer than that and might be the new formula.
