  • Why use a clay bar if cleaning with #83?

While I can really feel the difference after using the clay bar on the paint, it does seem that it would not really be necessary if using a stronger cleaner like #83. I understand the clay removes surface residue and contaminants but wouldn't #83 or other cleaners do the same thing?

    Hey,

While #83 may remove many surface contaminents, it would have difficulty in removing things like rail dust etc. As such, using a clay bar is really a good idea.

I agree...Even after repeated buffings, I was never able to get the smooth finish that I wanted by using a cleaner alone....Clay is the way!

What I wonder about is that people like DetailingDude on corvetteforum.com recommend wash-->clay-->dewax-->#83

I've asked him about this ordering without response...what do you guys think?
...it seems to make more sense to do this...wash-->dewax-->clay-->#83

        how about it?

          Hey,

If one is planning on using #83 after claying, there is no need to remove any old wax as the #83 DACP will remove it anyway.

          Cheers!

I agree with Tim, if you're going to use a compound, paint cleaner, or cleaner/polish after washing and claying, there is no reason, (that I can think of), to use a chemical wax remover.

Not only will Meguiar's compounds, paint cleaners and cleaner/polishes remove the old wax, they will also polish the paint and add richness and vibrancy. I'm not sure you can say that about popular products used to chemically strip wax from the finish.

              ~ One man’s opinion / observations ~

I am in agreement with the responses thus far, but I will say two things- 1) It's the Corvette forum (2) Zanio (and their obsession with the removal of wax/oil to prep a paint surface for Z)

DetailingDude likes to cover all the bases with his responses.

                Good points TOGWT

Just to note, I have never said there was anything wrong with using a chemical wax and grease remover to remove wax, it's more of a personal preference for each person to decide what's best for them.

On that subject, in Meguiar's old Detailer Line, both the All Purpose Cleaner and the All Purpose Cleaner Plus could be used to de-wax a car at the appropriate dilution level.
