  • Need some recommendations for show car with single stage urethane paint.

    All-
Spent the last couple hours searching the forum and I found a ton of great stuff on products and working with single stage paints.

I couldn't find anything specific on which products work best for single stage paints or if certain Meguiar's products were better suited for this type of paint.

This is a black show car. Probably will be driven only a couple hundred miles per year. Obviously stored indoors. Price and time are not important to me as the overall results.

Intersted in hearing recommendations for polishes, waxes, prep, etc..
    Thanks.

Welcome to MOL!! You've come to the right place. I'd love to give you all kinds of recommendations, however I've never worked on SS paint. I'd be speaking from zero experience and I don't like to do that. It will only be a matter of time before Mike Phillips replies with the perfect products for your situation. Good luck and please POST PICTURES!! We love to drool over showcars with perfect paint.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

1960 Corvette - How To Restore Single Stage Acrylic Lacquer Paint

Our personal favorite paint to work on is old single stage paints, most of our Extreme Makeovers have been single stage paints and we tackle them primarily with two great products...

Re: Need some recommendations for show car with single stage urethane paint.

Hello and welcome to the Forum!

First of all, I have to ask: what is the condition of the paint? Perfect, minor swirls, etc?

From experience, single stage paints respond very well to Meguiar's polishes and cleaner / polishes.

#80 works great on single stages as a cleaner / polish to remove those minor swirls. #83 is another cleaner / polish with more cleaning power.

#7 is always a fantastic pure polish to use if the paint is in perfect condition. Also, the other polishes, #3, 5, 81 and DC2 will do just fine.

All of Meguiar's waxes will work on single stages. Right now, NXT 2.0 is my preferred protectant, but there are many others, too.

          to MOL, 58vette!

Since you mention “single stage urethane” I take it that it’s a relatively recent re-spray? Or if the re-spray’s 25 years old it was shot with something like Imron?

I ask because the workability of your paint comes primarily from its type and formulation, not whether it has pigment. The factory single-stage urethane on my 13 year-old Isuzu is more like the rock-hard clear on the last GMC I worked on than the 34 year-old single-stage acrylic enamel on my Jensen. And all of those are waaaaay different from the acrylic lacquer that Mike polished on that Vette.

It really comes down to your paint on your car, how it responds, what condition it’s in and what you’re trying to achieve.

So,… What condition is it in? What are you trying to achieve? What has happened to it in the past? Got pix? (note: I’m asking and not making any assumptions because I’ve seen never/hardly driven show cars with very expensive paint jobs that ranged everywhere from pristine to horrible)

Also, are you working by hand or with a machine?

Re: Need some recommendations for show car with single stage urethane paint.

Thanks for all of the prompt responses and great recommendations.

Just for clarification: It is NOT a single stage lacquer paint, it IS a single stage urethane paint. Not sure if this makes a difference for product suggestions. The car underwent a complete frame off restoration by a professional about 18 months ago. It is a top flight NCRS '58 corvette. The paint is in fantastic condition (the car only has 40 miles since the restoration). I just purchased it and have been using a couple different products, but need some recommendations primarly on polish and waxes. I am sure it will get some swirls and light scratches over time, but this is not a car that will rack up miles. I only plan on putting a few hundred miles a year on the car and when it's outside it will likely be in the sun at a car show. Living in the LA area, it will only be driven when the weather is sunny (unlike today) and I anticipate some great drives up and down the PCH on weekends!

            Keep the recommendations coming....

This coming Thursday we're holding one of our "Open Garage" events, if you can you should try to attend and while you're there will show you a lot of what you want to know when it comes to working on your car's paint.

You don't have to drive the Vette here, drive your daily driver if you like and we'll show you techniques on this car that you can use on your Corvette.

By the way, this truck has a modern single stage urethane paint and it was machine cleaned using a few products from Meguiar's 80's series in our Professional Line and then topped with two coats of NXT Tech Wax.

Pretty much all of Meg’s products work on single-stage urethanes, so you have lots of options. It'll come down to what you want to achieve at any given time.

As an example, the M80 that Mike and PorscheGuy997 recommend is a great product with a lot of versatility. But urethanes are usually pretty tough. So if you had serious swirls the M80 probably wouldn’t remove them by hand. With a machine it would remove defects more aggressively.

Since the paint is pristine the most important thing is to use the products and techniques that will keep it that way, preventing you from needing to deal with defects. It only takes zero miles and a couple of seconds to damage a finish.

Using a really gentle, highly lubricating wash shampoo, super gentle wash mitts, soft applicators for chemicals, high quality microfiber towels, etc will keep your ride looking it’s best.

Personal taste also plays into it. Two products can both work great but you usually find you prefer one while somebody else might like the other better. I could rattle off a list of what I would probably use if I were in your shoes, but you may feel totally different about things.

Since you’re local, I’d really, really recommend coming on down to a Meg’s open garage and taking a Saturday class. You’ll be able to play with the products yourself, understand what they do and get a feel for what will work best for you, personally.

Well, ok, can’t resist. I will rattle off a few things. These are mostly easy to find over the counter and all usable by hand. If you’re willing to go to commercial sources and/or go to a machine the list will expand.

                Wash
Gold Class Shampoo. Buy the biggest size your supplier has (at Target that’s a half gallon).
Microfiber Wash Mitt. Some guys will tell you lamb’s wool is the only way to go. Others prefer sponges. It’s a personal thing. I prefer microfiber and Meg’s makes a nice one.
Five Gallon Buckets, two of ‘em. One for wash, one to rinse the mit.
Grit Guard(s). Ok, not commonly available over the counter, but worth ordering online. One for the rinse bucket as a minimum but I say get two, one for each bucket.
Drying Cloth. I prefer waffle weave microfiber towels like Meguiar’s Water Magnet. Get at least two. (I would also go with the Water Magnets in the marine products line, they’re bigger than the automotive WM’s.)

                Surface Prep
Smooth Surface Clay Kit. Even garage queens get a lot more surface contaminants than anybody realizes.
ScratchX. Because scratches can, do, and will happen.
M80 Speed Glaze. A great, versatile product.

                Polish (as in glaze) –
M07 Show Car Glaze. The classic. Been around forever and still works great, especially on single stage black.

                Protect
NXT Tech Wax 2.0 or Gold Class. NXT will last longer and protect better but for a show/occasional use car it’s not as much of an issue. You just might find that the extra polishing oils in the Gold Class are the ticket for your ride.

Both NXT and GC come as either liquid or paste, take your pick. The choice of liquid or paste is purely personal preference, they perform the same.

                Ongoing Maintenance
                Ultimate Quik Detailer.

                General use -
Soft Foam Applicator Pads. Megs’ come in a two-pack. Get at least two two-packs.
Supreme Shine Microfiber Towels. They come individually or in three-packs. I say get three three-packs. (Including the one in the clay kit you’ll have ten total, that’s a good start.)

Thanks guys for the info on removing lite to medium swirls/scratches on my cars' urethane single stage paint (6 mo. fresh).
