  • Re: Ultimate Polish

Just wanted to throw a question in here real quick, since I'd like to try both NXT and ULW on my new car arriving this week. Would glazing with UP before waxing function well to remove a previous wax or would I be best served by just claying? Using the UP seems to be more cost effective, and possibly healthier for the paint.

Applying UP would definitiely work well to remove a previous wax layer. Plus, you're getting the added benefit of the polishing oils in the same step.

It's probably a bit more work than just claying but if you're prepared to do it, then I'd say go for it.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I picked up a bottle of the Ultimate polish..finally got around to trying it out. Goes on easy and comes of easy. I love it...I think more than #7. Can't wait to apply it entirely to my car.

LS1 monster, does it leave the finish as wet and glossy as #7, seems like with the mild corrective abilitis in UP along with the high gloss, #7 has almost become redundant??

#7 will never be redundant as far as I´m concerned

I am truly impressed with UP! I wet sanded down a scrap fender to remove some scratches and orange peel, then buffed out the sanding marks with UC and an orange polishing Griot's pad. Then I used UP and the shine and gloss really popped more than I expected. I was skeptical that it would do much, but I am a true believer now! It was like UP made the paint brighter. Love that stuff.

How much polish should I be using on the applicator/on the paint at a time?

Do I use YELLOW or BLACK pad for UP?

For me at least, Ultimate Polish is a multi-use tool. With a yellow pad, fast speed of 4 to 5, slow arm speed and mild to heavy force, it is a minor swirl removal tool. With a black pad, medium to slow speed 3 to 4, still slow arm speed and light to mild force, it is a polish to remove minor hazing and bring up shine before waxing.

Really like how it performs on delicate paint.

A typical "X" pattern on the face of the pad, give or take. It sort of depends on what you're after, how the paint is responding, etc. Don't over use it, but you do want enough to be able to work it for a bit.

Nice observations, David. People too often fixate on just the cut level of a given product, and you've shown how there's so much more to the process than just that.

Sorry for such a late reply. The first time I only tried it out on sections of my car by hand. Last weekend I hit the entire car with it using the D/A. My goodness, I don't even want to bother waxing this polish leaves such a amazing finish. But in the end I did follow up with liquid ultimate wax and D/A. It did take away the minor hairline scratchs/swirls nicely. I'll need to go back and give #7 a shot but for now I love, love the ultimate polish.

i"ve read about UP have some polishing oil on it. does it have any bonding issue if we top it with sealant? such as nxt/m21. do we need to IPA wipedown before? but i've also read that polishing oil can bring more wet/gloss to paint finish. slightly confuse here

No, you'll be fine. All of Meguiar's polishes are compatible with all of their sealants/waxes so there is no issue and no need to do an IPA wipedown.

If you're using a competitors product that recommends applying it only to perfectly clean paint, then we recommend you follow their directions. If that means doing an IPA wipedown prior to applying that product, then so be it.
