  • SeaDoo and hard water spots

    Greetings--

    New SeaDoo jet skis--

We recently road for several days in a lake with hard water. When we got back home, I washed them with NTX wash. I dried them afterwards.

The skis have a dark blue gel coat part. Its full of water spots.

Suggestions on getting the water spots off before I apply a coat of NTX liquid wax ? I'm assuming that once I get a good cost of NTX wax on them, the water spots *should* not be as much of a problem.

    Thanks--

You may find what you need i nthe marine care products. There is a whole line of boat care, including gel coat products, like washes, cleaners, waxes, etc.

Boater's World and West Marine carry all the Meguiar's Marine products. I hear they work pretty well from my friend who works there (and has a boat to test them on...which I don't :P)

It sounds like you may need to use a Cleaner/Wax, such as Meguiar's #50 in order to remove those water spots. Followed by Meguiar's Priemum Flagship Polymer Wax.

I would highly recommend only using products made specifically for use on boat fiberglass.

You could give this product a try and report back how well it worked.

          Hard Water Spot Remover

Also, read this article as it will explain what's going on and how to repair it.

I need to check the Marine forum more often! I missed this one. Mike, can this be used on painted metal too? Can it be used on automotive paint?

Hi Mike- is this safe for cars too?

              Thanks!

Re: SeaDoo and hard water spots

Still no responses from anyone who has actually used the water spot remover.

I've just ordered a bottle and I'll post my results. FYI, I'm cleaning a Sea Doo 04' RXP. It probably has at least a month of total time in the water since last April. I'm in Arizona and our lakes have water that is very, very hard. I'll be cleaning gel-coat, painted plastic and some fake, plastic chrome stuff that spots like you wouldn't believe.

To be honest, my cleaning regimen is to do it in the fall. It takes a lot of different products and a lot of scrubbing & rubbing, but I always get my Sea Doos show-room shiny by the time I'm done. It takes around 8 hours per watercraft. There are many Meguiars products involved. I am very stingy with the use of abrasives so I don't wear the shine off too quickly.

I found something called WonderFoam that I use below the waterline. It's a Spray on, rinse off kind of thing that MUST be washed away, but works very well and leaves the Gel Coat (Black), looking brand new.
I'm still trying to find the Silver Bullet for the more complex areas above the waterline where I'm afraid I may get the WonderFoam caught in places where I can't rinse it away.

Let's see if the Meguiars Water Spot remover can handle a really tough job.

It will probably be a couple of weeks before I receive the stuff & try it out.

Don't see many watercraft with black gelcoat! But that's because it's a pain to maintain. Boats/waverunners with black gelcoat looks awesome though!

Please post pics when you're done! We don't have any of PWCs, especially black!

Re: SeaDoo and hard water spots

I received my first bottle of the Meguiars Water Spot remover (#47). I've only done some spot testing so I don't have any pictures yet.

To recap, I'm cleaning a Sea Doo 04' RXP. For you non-watercraft folks, it's a 4 stroke, 2-seat 215HP Supercharged, Intercooled rocket. Lot's of fun. It lives at a marina for the summer in the Phoenix area. The water in the lake is extremely hard and the 100+ degree temps and dry climate cause very bad spotting in no time flat. I spend my time riding it, not cleaning it and now that I have reached the end of the season, it's cleaning time. The water spots are the only real challange.

As advertised, #47 doesn't run off right away, which I'm sure helps it do it's job. Here's a rundown of the different surfaces I tried it on.

Gelcoat: (Black on the bottom & Yellow on the top) 1 application got the waterspots totally off.

Painted plastic: (mostly gray) 1 Application was all that was needed here as well.

Fake Chrome: (plastic) This is the really hard one. 2 or 3 applications were needed and it still looked streaky, but not spotted. Windex removed the streaks and the chrome looks great.

Molded Plastic: (Black) There are fins (Sponsens), that are part above & part below the waterline when the Ski sits at rest in the water. These wouldn't come clean even after a few applications. Since they are on the bottom half of the Ski, I don't mind using the more caustic WonderFoam on them.

My final review is that this is wonderfull stuff. I'm going to buy a few more bottles as I will have my wife's Ski to clean in a few months. I'd highly recommend #47 for anyone who has to clean off very bad spotting.

Now that I'm done here, I need to go post on my favorite 2 Personal Watercraft forums and spread the word.

                        Thanks Meguiar's

Thanks for the review! I wonder how it works on painted metal surfaces? A boat dealer just down the street from me has some. Maybe I should get some just to have on hand.
