  • #49 then what... Wax?

We are looking to restore some oxidized fiberglass at work.... Mike suggested a couple products and now we have some questions on them...

If we apply #49 and skip the polish step (marine polish) is that acceptable? For time reasons 3 steps might be a little much? I know the finish may not look its best but it should look good... correct.

When applying #49 can it be used effectively by hand in tight areas?

For a wax.... would something in the marine line like the pure wax work best or could I use some #26 or similar as our LSP?

    Any help would be great!
    Thanks
    Brandon

    Hi Brandon,

The M49 can be used by either hand or machine on Fiberglas gel-coats, be careful with it however as it is an extremely aggressive product.

Gel-coats tend to absorb our polishing oils really well and this helps to prevent oxidation in the future as well as bring out the beauty in the finish, so I would recommend taking the extra step to apply the M45 polish. For a wax, if you have never used the Flagship Premium Boat Wax, give it try, it is polymer wax that will lock in and preserve the results you achieved with the M49 and the M45.

When removing heavy oxidation by machine, you want to clean your pad often either with a nylon brush or with a terry cloth towel. By hand you'll also want to clean your applicator or switch to a new, clean applicator. The reason for this is you'll be removing a lot of oxidized material and it will tend to build-up.

Mike, does Meguiar's still make #50? That might be a good choice too. Although if you are using a multi-step process, the Flagship wax might be the best choice for a LSP.

              Hey RamAirV1,

              Until Mike comments....

As far as I know, Meguiar's is still manufacturing M-50 One Step Boat/RV Cleaner Wax.

For heavy oxidation, you should try the #67 One Step Compound! Wow!! Great product!!!

I've never used the #67. Looks like a great time saver for a boat!

M50 Boat Cleaner/Wax is one of our best selling products in the Marine line and is available in both liquid and paste versions.

It has always worked very well for me. It will usually last for the majority of a boating season and it is very easy to use.

                      First thanks for the help!

A quick first impression... the process that you suggested is working well. I really like the #49 and #45 just might be a couple of new products to keep around at work. Its not perfect (didn't expect that) but its MUCH, MUCH better!

There are some spots I think are to far "gone"/defects in the fiberglass. Where the sun hits no stop there appears to be white spots below the surface that can not be repaired. The surface is smooth and glossy but something appears to be below the surface.

When we get it all done I will post some photos, hope this weekend if all goes well.

Sometimes, due to factors out of the boat owner's and detailer's control, the gel coat can blister from underneath and that is bad news. I had that happen on the part of the hull that sits in the water. I had to have the blisters repaired and then an anti-fouling paint applied to the hull below the waterline. No problems since using the antifouling paint. This was a very expensive repair.

Those of you who think maintaining a car is expensive (I agree), ought to own a boat LOL! It's all worth it though.

Mike has outline the same basic process that I follow with most older oxidized boats.

Will the Flagship Wax be more durable than the #50? Does it have a different look?
