  • Polishing aluminum weaking metal??

ive polished the side of my aluminum boat and i was just curious how much am i weakening the metal every time i polish? im not sure what exactly the thickness of the aluminum is but its around 1/8" prob less. i know its prob nothing to worry about but just curious.

how long would it take to weaken the metal?

About 100 yrs or so! with polishing you are not removing much material.

Unless you're polishing it with a belt sander, it'll take a veeeeery looooong time to thin it perceptibly.

If anything, you're probably making it stronger. Metal failures tend to happen at high stress zones like scratches. Polishing out microscopic scratches and cracks can often increase a material's durability substantially.
