  • Cleaning without water

I detail my boat in a heated shed each winter. The boat is washed before it goes in the shed but there is a significant amount of dust and grit on the surface when it comes time to polish and wax.

There is no access to water in the building and this is a large boat. Any suggestions on how to clean it in preparation for compounding, polishing and waxing?

      Hello stephentfreitas:

I'd recommend buying a few 5 gallon buckets with lids and packing your own shampoo and supplies down there.

If it's dust and such, a quick wash and then rinse with the water in the buckets seems like it would work.

It will be a hassle but, it'd certainly be better than having to hitch up and pull it off somewhere to a wand wash.

Good luck! Let us know what you go with!

I'd try a QEW wash, or could try my wash method that I use when there is no hose, and no QEW.

You get a 32 oz spray bottle, and mix up a solution of water and car wash, a little stronger than you would mix it up(instead of 1 oz per 128 oz, try .5 oz for 32 ounces of water). Then you need three 5 gallon buckets, and 2 wash mitts. In bucket 1, you mix up your wash solution, and drop mitt 1 in, in bucket 2, you fill with plain water, and mitt 2, and bucket three is your rinse bucket, so you just fill it with cold water.

Step one: spray panel with premixed solution to soften dirt and dust.
Step two: grab mitt from wash bucket and wash panel, then rinse mitt in bucket 3 and place back in wash bucket.
Step Three: get mitt from bucket two and "wash" off the suds and soap with clean water. Bucket two may need to be emptied and refilled a couple of times. Rinse mitt in bucket three.
        Step four: dry panel.
Step five: Repeat, one panel or section at a time, starting top to bottom.

        It works great
        I want 4" Softbuff pads!
