  • Champion bass boat

Okay, my father in law has a champion bass boat with some nasty swirls in the gel coat. He has #54 and flagship wax, but they aren't getting the swirls out obviously. What products are recommended? I think it would be best to get a wax with a maximum longevity since the boat is used A LOT and is outside year round.

    Thanks,
    Andy

Well, a wash and wax won't get rid of the swirls, that's for sure.

What you need to do is essentially the same thing you'd do on a car, only with products designed for use on gel coat. Gel coat is much, much harder than automotive paint so while it's OK to use paint care products on gel they probably won't be quite strong enough for the task at hand. Everything is done the same way you'd work on paint, but you want to use products like (from least to most aggressive) M44 Color Restorer, M49 Oxidation Remover, M67 One Step Compound or M91 Power Cut Compound.

If the swirls are light and oxidation isn't too bad, M49 is probably a good choice. But if nothing has been done to the surface for several years and the finish is looking and feeling a bit chalky, reach for the M67. M91 is pretty potent stuff so unless the finish is just hammered you probably don't need it.

You can also use some M45 Polish as an optional step prior to applying a coat or two of our Flagship Premium Marine Wax. That's going to be our best, longest lasting product for use on gel coat.

Thanks Mike! Besides a wash and wax I don't think the boat had much done to it. It still in pretty good condition as the hours were pretty low when he bought. I guess I would say by the sounds of it the M49 would be good.

Should I use an 8207 pad like I do with my car? Also, I think that the flagship wax he has is the old formula. Would it be wise to step up to the new stuff?

The part I'm most excited about is using PlastX on his windshields. They have seen better days.

By the way Mike, your advice for using 105 on my Saturn was great. I am still in shock how good it looks. I just need to stop being a slacker and get some better pics.

M91 is going to be better suited to rotary use, but the others are all fine via D/A
