  • Fiberglass Restoration Kit

I am thinking of purchasing the Fiberglass Restoration Kit to attempt to bring some shine back to my boat. It is a 1981 Glastron GX-150. I believe this boat is "metal-flaked'. Is the restoration kit safe to use on this boat?

Also, is there any better documentation on these chemicals, particularly the No 49 oxidation remover? I am planning on doing this by hand, as I don't want to purchase any equipment, and feel like I'd be safer doing it by hand. What do I need to do to avoid damaging the finish or causing swirl marks? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I will attach a picture, but unfortunately it isn't a good one. I wasn't able to make it up to the cabin this past weekend to take some "before" pictures. You can however see the heavy oxidation, particularly on the bow of the boat.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, the flake isn't really going to change things for you, but the level of oxidation on the bow sure is. Working by hand here is going to be a heck of a project, and you may find the M49 just getting absorbed by the gel coat. If that happens and you find it difficult to work with, give the worst areas a healthy dose of M45 Polish first - that will help to somewhat rejuvenate the finish and prevent it from drinking in all the M49 and allow you to properly work that product (which is where all you cleaning/oxidation removal will come from).

Honestly, working by hand the least of your worries will be creating swirls; don't even worry about that. You might even find that terry cloth applicators help you out here as the terry will provide some bite, or cut, of its own to supplement that of the M49.

I have a little orbit waxer/polisher. Is that something I should try with the M49? I believe I've read before that it isn't the best for waxing, but would it work for removing the oxidation?

Those tools usually don't have enough power to correct even light to moderate defects in automotive paint. What you're dealing with is some pretty heavy oxidation in gel coat, which is much harder than automotive paint. That tool is likely to be totally ineffectual for your needs. Sorry.

I have exactly the same boat as posted above. My top deck only has light oxidation and is in pretty good shape. Can you give me specific recommendations how to rejuvenate the clear coat finish and polish?

          Thanks...
