  • Restoring my 87 Dyna-Trak 180 SS (pics).

I am restoring my new (to me) bass boat with my future step-son and I have a couple of questions. I know Meguiars has great products, but the only brand I know about is the 3M for marine, since it is praised on my bass boat forum! To me I think that they are very expensive and hard to find! I just need some suggestions on what products to use on my gel coat that I can pick up locally.

I have already got her looking nice spending a bunch of hours wet sanding starting with 1000 grit to 1200 grit and finishing up with 1500 grit! I bought this boat for a steal and the guy let her sit out in the weather uncovered!

I am looking for a good rubbing compound and a finishing polish that will make my gel coat look good and protect her! What can you guys reccomend?

    Thanks!

Are you working by hand or machine and if by machine what kind of machine?

Machine Photos - DA Polishers - Rotary Buffers - Traditional Orbital Buffers

If you're sanding gel-coat you should be using a rotary buffer to remove your sanding marks.

You have to be very careful with large flake gel-coats because the flake is in the gel-coat just below the surface and sanding and buffing will have you exposing the flake.

If you feel the surface does it feel smooth or textured?

Don't know where you're at with this project but if you haven't started to sand yet you might try just compounding it as our compounds work exceedingly well and you might be able to restore the appearance without sanding.

How much cut? #49 vs #67 vs #91

M49 Oxidation Remover is the least aggressive of these 3...

M67 One Step Compound is next in line and was designed more for hand application but can be used by machine for 2000 grit or finer

M91 Power Cut Compound is the most aggressive...It was designed to remove up to 1000 - 1200 grit on gel coat by rotary machine but can also be used by hand.
