  • Polish one vs another...interesting observation

Just tryed 3M Marine Finesse-it 2 Polish on areas of my black gel coat. To my surprise it did NOT work as well as the Meguiar's #45 boat/RV polish.
What I mean by this is, Polish vs Polish the Meguiar's product showed a deeper more wet color vs the 3M leaving a haze in the black. (this is just the polish side by side).
When a coat of 3M Marine Ultra Performance Paste wax was used over top...they both looked pretty good but the edge(ever so slight) still went to the side with Meguiar's polish underneath.
Interesting...I wonder if the 3M polish and 3M top Paste wax would hold out/last longer in color fade resistance vs the Meguiar's and 3M Paste Wax?
Regardless I've never used anything better than the 3M Marine Ultra Paste Wax for a top coat.

    Hi Hammerdown,

    Was the boat's gel oxidized?

I agree, the 3m Ultra Performance Paste Wax is by far the ultimate marine wax. Will be using that this week on a cigarette boat -- which needs as much slickness as possible on the hull for optimal speed.

      Hi HammerDown,

      Welcome to Meguiar's Online

Interesting test. Question: Have you ever tried the Meguiar's M-16 Professional Paste Wax? This might be a fairly good wax to compare against the 3M paste wax.

Do you have a pictures of the Cigarette Boat? Those boat are just so cool looking. One of the Ferrari owners that brought his yellow Ferrari to the Ferrari Detail Day at Meguiar’s! has offered to bring his Cigarette boat to Meguiar's for an extreme makeover, I'm not sure where we could do the the work however, seeing that it won't fit inside the garage. We have a number of large canopies, I wonder if it would fit under a couple of these?

        Hi Mike,

I will be taking photos of the boat this week while I work on it. If interested, I'll post them on here.

The Meguairs paste wax can be used on gel coats? Hmm, I was led to believe that automotive waxes wouldn't be able to stand up against Mother Nature's wrath when it comes to the salt water lifestyle?

Would you like me to post some pictures of a 1997 Ferrari 355 Spyder (yellow w/black top) I "extreme detailed" for a Ferrari carshow?

How long is the guy's cigarette boat? I've never done a boat with the Meguairs paste wax but 3Ms can be used in direct sun. Believe it has to do with the oil content in it. From what I heard, the more carnuaba content the harder it is to remove and the sun doesn't help with that.

No I haven't...but I've tryed the Meguiar's Marine Pure Boat wax and it didn't hold out very well.
The 3M Ultra (Marine)Performance Paste has some strong UV Protectors in it...I belive this is in part what holds the gel color in so well not to mention it's pretty durable for below the water line, but again their marine polish was a dud, at least for me.
Does the Mirror Glaze have UV protection in it... And is it a carnauba/natural product?

As I stated in the "FlagShip" Thread I did 1'st cut the gell with micro fine paper and buff, polish, wax. I would say no to the question if my Gel is oxidized, out of the 7 colors in the gel the Black is well, the hardest to keep a deeeeep wet black. But remember it's original from 1983 and some think it's a new boat!

            Wax Wax

I think 3M and Meguiars make a great product in their paste wax. However, I know that the 3M seems to not come off well of newly polished gelcoat and leave streaks. 3M is a hard wax but works best on new gelcoat. I tried the 3M on a dark clearcoat go-fast boat an it looked splochy. Have Fun

Yes, I know I for one would like to see the pictures, I'm sure others will as well.

Meguiar's Professional Paste Wax is a traditional hard, or heavy wax, I know in the early days it was stated right on the can that it was for automotive, aircraft and marine use. The most important thing about using the M-1611 Professional Paste Wax is that the surface must be properly prepared, that is cleaned and polished. If these two criteria are met then you can use M-16 on both gel-coat or painted finishes.

Would you like me to post some pictures of a 1997 Ferrari 355 Spyder (yellow w/black top) I "extreme detailed" for a Ferrari car show?
Sure, everyone loves to look at before and after pictures, if you only have the after pictures that's good too!

Meguiar's doesn't recommend using any of our waxes in direct sunlight when the temperatures are high. If you're talking about direct sunlight in the morning, in the late afternoon, on clear day in November in Oregon, then it's okay and our products will perform as expected. But if your taking about applying any of our products at 12:00 noon in Arizona in August, then the heat from both high temperatures and from direct sunlight are going to make our products, (most products), more difficult to use and get good results from. YMMV
