  • windsurfing sails monofilm protectant

Does any body know if there are any products designed to protect and revive monofilm? (i.e. windsurfing sails).

Mostly "less than paper thin" monofilm with kevlar reinforcement. The UV rays and deep scratch is the monofilms worst enemy. You cannot rub anything on the monofilm, just spray on.

Overtime the monofilms becomes weak and opaque which leads to brittleness.

          Does the manufacturer recommend anything?

I am not familiar with that type of material. Most protectants in the automotive/boat industry that are a spray on would require wiping it off.

I will see what I can find out...

            Thanks

Yes I can wipe off, but not rub in/off (i.e. PlastiX). On top of that these windsurfing sails get wet, so the product must have some sort of durability when exposed to water.

Okay, it sounds as though the material is a type of vinyl so I would suggest the Tech Protectant, it protects using UVA/UVB inhibitors to help reduce fading and cracking. The Tech Protectant is not water soluble so it should be fine in the water. Use it a few days prior to getting the sail wet so it has a chance to soak in/dry. Because this is an unfamiliar material try a small test spot in an inconspicuous place first. If it looks good then do the entire sail and a while later wipe off any excess.

Good luck and be sure to share some pictures with us!
