  • Is this process going to work for this boat?

My dad is looking at selling his boat, and I would like to help him restore it by spring time so that he can get top dollar for his boat. I have some example pictures to shop with a mock process. If anyone can help me, that would be great.

It seems that M-44 M-45 M-50 Are all pretty much the same.

    ---Plan---
    Boat
    M-54 Boat Gel Wash
    M-49 Heavy Oxidation Remover
    M-45 Boat/RV Polish
Top it with a regular wax I have here. (Not sure which one yet)
    M-71 Canvas Cleaner
    M-72 Canvas Protectant

    Trailor
    Clay
M-2 Fine Cut Cleaner w/Polishing Pad
    NXT Wax

What do you think about the plans. And how do you think it will go with this boat as pictured above.

    The Boat

    The Canvas

    The Trailor

Is there anything I should change, omit, add in? Questions, comments, suggestions, please let me know.

      Hi mschoelen,

Sorry for not getting to this sooner, we've been kind of busy, we're actually holding a class as we type this and there's about a dozen guys here working on cars.

These are all very different, we'll get you some more information tomorrow.

This recipe looks like it will work great, one question... how are you applying the M49 and the M45?

Again, this looks good except we're wondering how you're going to apply the paint products. One other option would be to clay and the apply ColorX aggressively and call it done.

DOnt forget any vinyl protection, metal polishing, glass cleaning, rubber that needs dressing as well.. All will add some sparkle to the overall look.

mschoelen: I would like to see your "after" results on this. I have a boat in similar shape that I'm about to work on.

            Here's the nutshell version...

M44 is a farily aggressiive oxidation remover, it's called Color Restorer becuase in most cases after you remove oxidation you reveal the true color. It's not near as aggressive as the one you've listed you're going to use, M49 Oxidtion Remover which is very aggressive.

M45 is a pure polish, it is non-abrasive and for use after the oxidation has been removed to gorge the gel-coat with Meguiar's rich polising oils which will futher bring out the color and add gloss.

M50 is a strong cleaner/wax for doing three steps in one process, clean, polish and protect.

Just to inquire again, how do you plan to work on the gel-coat?

By hand, dual action polisher or rotary buffer?

Re: Is this process going to work for this boat?

I've done a few boats with this amount of fading and more. I usually start with # m45 and a rotary, followed by # M67 (One Step Cleaner) with the G-100. Sometimes it's now ready for wax (i use Flagship wax, dont know the #) or the # M45 if it still needs a little more shine.
Judging by the difference in colour around where the emblems used to be, I hope you have arms like a gorrilla or are using a machine.

For the Boat i will use a PC. For the Trailor, probably mostly by hand, since it looks kinda difficult to use a PC at all, (Besides the fenders). Maybe I will just use #45 if needed. Hopefully I can work on it this weekend or next. Thanks guys!

Yes, I was planning on it. I just have never worked on a boat before, so I needed to make sure I would be ok with this process. Hopefully it will come out looking brand new! I'll keep you guys up to date with the outcome.

And Mike I will try the Clay / ColorX tip you game me, and see how that turns out.

Are the boat waxes specially formulated to deal with constant water, or will I be ok with a couple coats of NXT?

I would use boat wax, it is formulated for gelcoat.

I assume you are referring to our M63 Flagship Premium Marine Wax versus our M56 Boat/RV Pure Wax. The primary difference is the type of protection. The M63 Flagship is newer technology and offers polymer based protection. The M63 also offers more polishing oils. The M56 Boat/Rv Pure Wax offers a carnauba based protection.

As indicated in the name our M63 Flagship Premium Marine Wax is just that, "Premium". However we have many fans of our M56 Pure Wax as well so it really is your choice. No matter what our testing shows you need to be happy with the product. Try both and let us know what you think.
