  • Marine #57 vs. Mirror Glaze #40

Can someone explain the difference between these two products?

I've purchased both and have nearly emptied both bottles but noticed no differences in appearance, durability, or longevity. In short, they really seemed to be nearly the same product but, I have a hunch that they're not.

    Hi Rockpick,

Drawing on experience, I'll have to say their are probably some sleight formula differences. I'll check with R&D tomorrow and find out for you.

Thanks man. Just tack that onto my car detailing consulting bill that I owe you. LOL! I know, by now, the total must be getting lofty.

I would also like to know the answer to this question. I asked the exact same question on Showcargarage.com on January 16, and recieved no response.

Sorry about that, something’s fall through the cracks due to time issues.

I spoke with Mike Pennington, (Director of Training), and he said the conditioners and the cleaners are uniquely different.

The reason for this is because the type of dirt, grime, spills and contaminants, (both oil-based and water-based), that the interior and exterior of a car is exposed to are often different from the types of dirt, grime, spills, and contaminants that boat and other marine craft interiors and exteriors are exposed and subjected to.

So the answer is these two products are different in their chemical cleaners and conditioners. Now, that said, is the difference something the average user would ever notice? Probably not. Nevertheless, there is a formula difference.

Okay... let's take this one step farther....

In what instances would the Marine version be more applicable to automotive and vice-versa? Would there be such an instance?

I know we're really getting into the nuts and bolts of the products now but, it seems like there would be application differences....

OK so which product range should I use on my glass fibre gel coat car that is heavily oxidised and is suffering bad colour fading?

(not that I can get the marine range directly in the UK as far as I'm aware )

                Hi Rockpick,

You know I would have to say that I think you could use #57 in place of #40 if you ran out of #40, and visa versa.

That said, there are differences in the conditioners and the cleaners.

I don't think most people would notice a difference. Each one is more specifically formulated for the environment it will be used in.

I can appreciate your desire to ponder the subtle formula differences as well as application differences, but I think this is about as deep as we can dive into this subject.

First of all, What kind of car is that?

Second of all, this thread is referring to Meguiar's Vinyle Cleaner, Conditioner and Protectants in both the Professional line and the Marine line.

Your question, as I understand it relates to oxidized fiberglas gel coat?

If that's the case, then were talking about a completly different surface and the products that would work best for these surfaces.

This would probably best be done by starting a new post/thread dedicated towards removing oxidation and restoring the gloss and shine to fiberglas gel-coat surfaces in this forum.

Otherwise we do what they call, Hijack the thread.

                  Does that make sense?

                    Hi Mike,

Yes you are right - I was hijacking the thread I got so carried away with the thought of discussing the marine line that I jumped straight in

OK, I will start a thread, soon. The car is a Lomax 223 - a kit / special built on the chassis of a Citroen 2CV (its not the best looking kit but it is one of the three wheel conversions). As you can see its sat in the sun for too long, so when I have it running again, it will be a nice little project to do something with the bodywork

                      But... But.... But....

We're so shallow! We didn't really 'dive'! LOL!

That's fine man... I appreciate your help. You still da' man despite what all the other guys say hAHHAHAHAAH!.

#57 must have a mildew retardant in it because the mildew problem I had on my boat upholstery disappeared when I started using it.

In my experience, #57 is more durable. I only need to use it about once per season on my boat. I have used #40 on my car interior and it does not last as long. I do like #40 though. #57 is hard to wash off of my hands compared to #40 also.

I never did get around to trying #57 on my tires. I use Hot Shine on my tires and don't really want to switch.

Oh, and #40 and #57 smell different too.

Thanks Ram. I appreciate that information.

I guess it'll be #57 on my vinyl tonneau cover!

I would definitely recommend trying that on the cover! I can't believe this thread is over a year old! Time sure does fly.
