  • Boat Polish pads

    Hi Guys,

Searched through the forums but couldnt find the info im after.

I'm planning on polishing/wax our boat with a DA polisher similar to a PC.

The boat is in pretty good condition apart from some scratches to the bottom of the hull from rubbing on the trailer bearers. I plan to use

    Meguiars Oxidation Remover to remove the scrathes on the bottom of the hull;
then High Gloss Polish over the entire boat then followed by Flagship Premium Wax.

I'm not sure what pads i should use for each product. any advice would be great. Thanks

Well, using Meguiars pads, I think it will work the same way as with automotive products.

#8006 pads for the Oxidation remover.

#9006 pads for polish and wax.

      hey thanks.
just im not sure if its the same pads for automotive should be used for marine. Since one is a painted surface and one is a (gel coat) fiberglass surface. Theres different polishes for different surfaces..... not sure if different pads for different surfaces.

Generally speaking, modern gel-coat finishes are harder than automotive paints, for this reason you may be able to get aways with using our small foam cutting pad with the M49 Oxidation Remover

Follow this up with the M45 Polish with the W-8006 foam polishing pad and follow this up with wax.

When it comes to removing a scratch out of a gel-coat finish, the same rules apply as when it comes to removing a scratch out of an automotive paint finish except you usually have more film-build to work with.

What it Means to Remove a Scratch

If the scratches in the gel-coat finish have any depth to them at all, it is unlikely that you'll be able to remove them without a rotary buffer, and possibly you'll have to wet-sand them first and then remove your sanding marks using a rotary buffer.

Because these scratches are just going to be a common problem in this area, you might be better off not worrying about removing them and instead clean and polish the area around them and accept them as a part of boating life.

          Thanks for the reply Mike.
Yeah not sure if the da polisher will remove the scratches, if not i'll go to the rotary. I believe the scratches are from the previous owner driving the boat on and off the trailer. they used to use the boat in salt water and i think salt or sand may have been gathering in the carpet on the trailer bearers that would have been contributing to the scratching.

We always float on and off the trailer to avoid the hull rubbing on the bearers so hopefully once we polish them the hull will remain relativlly scratch free. We only use the boat in fresh water so we dont have the sand or salt problem. Planing on replacing the carpet on the bearers too.

Any way thanks for you help. Ill post some before and after pics when i get to doing it.

            Mike,
Are you referring to the W7006 cutting pad and using it with the G100? I'm getting ready to a boat for my sister and I'm planning on using #49.
