  • Metallic Black - Mini Moke Californian

It's been a while on since i've been on the detailing tools. The mrs and i have opened up a coffee shop inside a cinema and the hours dont allow me to do as much as i'd like to. So the story goes that the owner of this cinema has a Mini moke californian thats been modified somewhat & he'd like it shown in a car show next week. I'll get a list of what hes done later on. With only 600km on the ODO and having spent most of its life under a car cover, you'd be forgiven to think that the paint was in pretty good nik. Sadly this is not the case.

I've added some pics below to help describe the story.

as you can see the paint is swirled and hazy

even from a distance you can see the bad paint

with my trusty Meguiars i went to work ..
first was a wash and clay.
Having not much exposure to the elements the clay didnt pick up too much. But its still a necessary step.
Then after a test spot i decided to start with Medium cut cleaner (i forget the number lol) with 8006 pad for 2 passes

Then #80 with 8006 for 4 passes - i should note that the paint is very very hard and stubborn to work with.

This is the stage i am currently at. (til tomorrow)
There are still some other smaller marks in the paint which wont come out that were revealed once the larger swirls were removed. I feel that a cutting pad might be needed for this step.

heres whats been achieved so far.

PS : for those that are wondering the dots are the metallic fleck in the paint

From the drivers seat .. the left side of the bonnet remains untouched whilst i have only worked on the right side. I look forward to showing you the complete car engine and all.

the W7000 did help quite a bit but didnt leave it perfect. A light sand would of made the world of difference. I made the best of the arsenal that i had with me. A layer of nxt is sitting on it over night. I'll remove it in the morning b4 work & well see what it turned out like.

Certainly a big improvement, even if not 100% perfect. Should look good in the sun.

You wouldnt have a pic of the whole vehicle.. since I have no idea what Moke is...

sometimes i think resizing the photos so you dont have to horizontal scroll is just as hard as the detailing... might have to include this in the cost of my job from now on lol.
Here's what we ended up with after the nxt was removed.

due to the overcast weather i was trying hard to get the sun in these shots. again its not perfect but still pretty good.

here ive used photoshop to compare what i started with and what the finish product was like. Dramatically improved to say the least.

It should be noted that the owner of the vehicle put in a good 4 - 5 hours on the chrome (incl. engine), plastic and interior trim. Great work!! & certainly made the time go faster with some1 to chat to. And a BIG thanks to his wife for the yummy sandwiches

Beautiful, but I dont see how any full sized human could fit inside!

For quickly resizing images, I recommend Google's free photo managing software, Picasa 2. It's great for quickly doing simple editing of photos (such as brightness, red eye, and resizing). I use it when its not necessary to use photoshop.

Looks good, did you get to do a leather or vinyl product on the sats/tire cover as well?

I'm surprised the tires dont look more 'off-road'ish.. though this one clearly isnt off road much.

yep, the rear wheel cover & seats were cleaned with megs trim detailer. It is a small car in appearance but definately BIG in looks. I'll try to find a stock one so you all can make the comparison.

heres a quick site i found of an original

ok firstly i opened the 2 photos that i wanted to compare
i set the image size of the background photo to 725 x 525.
i then set the second photo to a smaller size... (personal choice)
and used the rectangular marquee tool to lasoo the entire smaller picture. Then switch to the MOVE tool and simply drag and drop it onto the bafckground picture and place it where u wish. Just save the picture under a different name so u dont overwrite your original and its all done.
