  • c3 NXT Garage Clinic (July 2005)

    July 2005 Private Clinic
Today I held a private detailing clinic for 2 really nice MINI owners that can't attend our normal clinics due to weekend scheduling conflicts, so I agreed to hold one just for them during the week.

    Featured Products:
    NXT Tech Wax
    ScratchX
    M83
    Quick Clay Detailing System
    NXT Car Wash
    Quik Detailer
    NXT Glass Cleaner
    NXT All Metal Polysh
    Gold Class Trim Detailer

    Left: Choump Right: Karen

Here are my two students, Choump and Karen. Both have 2005 MINI Cooper S with black roofs. Choump's is painted Pure Silver while Karen's is known as Pepper White. Choump prewashed his MINI, so I tackled his first. Karen came from Irvine (1 hr drive) so we washed hers on the spot.

    Washing

I let the students get wet as I supervised!

    Choump's MCS

When I first looked at Choump's car, I wasn't sure what needed to be done. It was so clean and shiny. But upon closer inspection, the paint was very rough to the touch, so claybar was the first step. Because it was overcast, I pulled out my trusty Xenon flashlight and showed Choump all the swirls on his roof. I did a test spot using #83 with my PC.

    Test Spot

Here I'm taping off the test spot area. Swirls are visible.

    Test Spot Comparison

Could it be any clearer? Left side is two passes of #83 and right is untouched. Also the #83 side was noticeably darker!

    Claybar First Time

While both Choump and Karen had heard about claybar before, they were both very hesitant about using it. Choump had the yellow Zaino Claybar and the instructions on how to use it scared him. With just a few minutes of showing how to use a small piece at a time, kneaded and shaped into a silver dollar, and liberal use of Quik Detailer, they were claying like pros.

    Claybar

Neither of them realized how easy it would be, nor the dramatic difference it would make. What both thought were rock chips on their front bumper, turned out to be road debris and residue--they were shocked to discover more than 50% were removed. And of course after claying, they couldn't stop enjoying how nice the paint felt!!

    Choump Using PC

This was Choump's first time using the PC. Though he was familiar with it, he had never used one before. I really enjoyed how both Choump and Karen were such sticklers for detail! They kept a sharp eye on anything I missed and promptly cleaned up after me!!!

    Wiping M83

Choump's happily checking the finish after wiping M83 off.

    Demoing NXT Glass Cleaner

    Demoing Trim Detailer

I found this great sponge with a handle at my local 99 cent store. Most of the time these handles have bristles on them and sold for cleaning tires, but I found they are the perfect size and applicator for Trim Detailer. Perfectly curved for our plastic wheel arches, and works great for touching up anytime.

    NXT Chrome Polysh

It's hard to see from this picture but the chrome tip on the left was polished and the right was left alone, and in person, there was a day and night difference between the two. NXT Polysh just made the chrome pop. Chomp was quick to use it on all chrome around the MINI!

    Sun Peeked Out

The came out for a little bit so we pulled the car into the sun and the roof was beautiful and swirl free.

    Sun Peeked Out

Look at how glossy the roof is. The black roof is now as glossy as the glass sunroof itself.

    NXT Tech Wax Shine!!!

    NXT Polysh Shine!!

    Beauty Shot!

    Our Next Student

Having small classes is a lot of fun. It really gives me the time to relax, be thorough, and provide the complete Meguiars experience from start to finish.

    Dirty Wheels

As you can see from the wheels, a thorough washing was necessary. We also took the opportunity to rotate her tires and add needed air to them.

    NXT Car Wash

So out came my trusty NXT Car Wash soap in my 5 gallon bucket--grit guard at the bottom.

    Defects

Here's one of the defects that Karen wanted me to look at. These were hairline scratches that were visible on the black roof. Karen was a slightly special case because she was a religious user of Mr. Clean. Her belief which I respected was to avoid rubbing the paint at all possible to prevent scratches from being inflicted. So she didn't dry the paint with towels. The result was that her roof was in better condition than Choumps, but still wasn't swirl free.

    Bumper Residue

Claybar removed all of the residue on this bumper!

    Claybar

    Here's Choump Claybarring away!

    Karen Preparing Claybar

First she's inspecting the claybar for any foreign matter, then kneading it to a silver dollar size chunk.

    Quik Detailer

She's spraying some Meguiar's Quik Detailer now to lubricate the paint surface.

    Claybar

    Now she's claybarring the paint

    Wiping Dry

And now she's wiping the just clayed area down with a soft microfiber towel.

    Rust Stains

Above and Below the chrome logo were rust stains. I tried using claybar and Quik Detailer and that helped. Then I used M83 and the PC to remove about 98% of it. There was still a faint stain visible, but it was a 100% improvement. I was afraid of working on it anymore.

    Cleaning Logo

To remove the M83 residue from the chrome logo, I used QD and a toothbrush!

    Plastic Trim Detailing

Here Choump is showing off my latest favorite tool--it's a 99 cent foam pad brush. It's got a plastic and rubber handle with dense foam glued to it. It's the easiest and mess free way to apply Trim Detailer to the plastic trim!

    Final c3 Touch

As a final touch to each detailed MINI, we apply the c3 vinyl logo. Sometimes the logo needs to be resized and cut specific to the application area as we did for Choumps MINI. But Karen's fit perfectly without modification!

    Karen's Roof

Scratch and Swirl Free! All the defects were greatly improved. ScratchX helped tremendously, but I didn't have the energy to rub them all out by hand. M83 took it further.

    Plastic Trim is Dark!

Trim Detailer rocks with my new applicator. It's easy enough to use every day to remove dust and make the trim dark again.

    Clean and Shiny

Look at that paint finish! No black residue and even the Chrome is shiny thanks to NXT Chrome Polysh!

    Karen's Eagle Eye

She found a spot I missed!

    Happy Owner!

    Using Swirl Finder

    No Swirls Here!!

    Choump's Badge

Choump need a c3 logo too! Here I had to reduce the logo about 15% and cut a new one using my vinyl cutter.

    Counterfeit MINI

My son in his Counterfeit MINI is demoing his bonnet release!

It was really a pleasure to hold my first weekday clinic for Karen and Chomp. They were both super nice people, they tolerated my endless stories, and even helped me clean up and put everything away. I would gladly hold another weekday clinic for them!

    What can I say except...

Wow! What a great friend you are!

When it comes to doing it right the first time, I have met literally thousands of people over the years that have struggled with trying to learn exactly what the right products are that they need for their particular project and even more difficult to find, someone that can show them exactly how to use them.

Discovering the right products and learning the right way to apply and remove them is often times the difference between utter disappointment and having your socks knocked off!

When a person invests in a new car, especially a car they would also consider their toy, they are very wary about working on it themselves let alone letting someone else work on it especially when this other person is using products they are unfamiliar with, for example detailing clay and machine applied products.

Taking your time to help your friends learn how to do it right the first time is such awesome thing to do. No doubt your reputation as an expert in the art of polishing paint now precedes you as in both your circle of influence in the real world as well as the cyber world. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't' this your 6th or 7th write-up on the Meguiar's Online Forum alone? (And we appreciate the time you take to create your write-ups with well written copy, clickable links and pictures that have been cropped, resized and also tell a story.

You have again taken the Meguiar's Online Motto to a new level!

    "Each one teach one"

I know that Karen and Choump must be very excited about the results you helped them to create and more important, the skills and knowledge you have imparted. Not only can they use these skills and knowledge the rest of their lives, but chances are very good they in turn will share freely with others just as you have freely shared with them.

I think I speak for everyone here at Meguiar's as well as our online community when we say,

    Job well done!

          Richard is the best...

I used to be a Zaino fan but after visiting C3 detail clinic hosted by Richard " OctaneGuy". I am have now move to Meguiar's NXT. Way easy to use and love the finish product. Richard is the best please to learn the how to use the Meguiar's product first hand. KEep up the good work Richard and see on Aug 13th.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. It's really a great deal of fun to work on MINI's, and getting to know the owners is what makes it all worthwhile. I'm really happy to be able to share my knowledge, and after having had such a great influence from Mike Phillips and his own clinics, it's a pleasure to be able to give something back to the community.

For those that didn't get the picture, AC_MINI is Choump.

Any MINI owners in the Orange County area of California, we MIGHT be coming to you in the very near future.

Btw, there is one drawback to my "detailing affliction". I keep eyeing my neighbor's black Mustang that hasn't been washed in months and is covered with bird doo--and I know the owner who is a student would appreciate a bath and spa treatment for her car----but it's not a MINI........

Man that's an awesome write up! I wish I could attend something such as that, or a actual Meguiar's class. But I don't think they ever come to the East Coast

I've noticed that I find myself looking at other cars and trying to think what the end product might be after a sweet detail! this website really got me into the detailing mood! now I can keep my show Civic looking good at all times!
