  • My First paint restoration/rotary use

This was my first time using a rotary buffer (or any buffer for that matter) and i was quite scared, so i took it slow and was very cautious. I have provided links i randomly found off of google. if that is not allowed i will remove them.

First, let me describe its old condition. the car sat outside in direct sunlight for over a year, after being owned by someone who drove it through the salty roads of chicago for school. the paint was so bad i thought it would need a repaint, after stripping down to bare metal (there's places its been repainted 2x over original).

So what I did is, I went to sears and got a Milwaukee 9" rotary orbital buffer ($199.99 + Tax)(link), 3m perfect it fine cut rubbing compound(link), and meguiar's professional swirl remover 2.0(link), as well as some meguiars gold class wax. I also got a makita 11" wool cutting pad(link) and a 3m foam polishing pad(link )(ended up not using the foam). Total investment at this point is ~$260 with tax.

So here's a photo of the top of the roof AFTER i had just polished it by hand (cleaner, polish, wax) taking about 45 minutes. as you can see it is terrible even after hand cleaning(if photo doesn't show up, imagine a tomato that's still pink, with water spots, and zero gloss)

    After rubbing compound:

    and my favorite

Conclusion: I feel if i used meguairs products solely (rubbing compound + polishing pads) i would have gotten a better end result. the swirl mark remover 2.0 is the best product out there as far as i'm concerned.

    So my steps:
    fine cut rubbing compound
    #9 SMR polish
    gold class wax

in a month or so when the wax has worn away i plan going back over it with the proper meguiars pad (i did all that with a WOOL pad) and some medium cut cleaner, show car glaze, and #26 wax. over all i am very impressed and i am in love with meguiars products and my new buffer

      Hi Steve,

      Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

I think you did a great job especially for your first time!

You clearly shown, (no pun intended), the dramatic difference that can be achieved between working with your hand and working with a rotary buffer.

3M makes some great products no doubt about it, but we believe that once you start switching over to and using similar product in the Meguiar's line, you'll see a difference and be glad you switched!

Before your next detailing session, check in with us and let us know what you're working on and we'll do our best to recommend some appropriate products to get the job done with Wow results!
