  • 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 -- Carchitects Auto Detail

It's been a solid minute since I've really gotten the chance to flex my detailing muscles, but sometimes the opportunity strikes when you least expect it. As was the case a couple months ago when my dealership co-worker Jason called me up and asked me if I could do some detailing work to his brand new 2021 GMC Sierra AT4. Of course, I was all the willing to accept such a challenge.

Having only put a few thousand miles on it since new, the truck was in very good shape (free of major R.I.D.S and only a few swirls). However knowing that Jason does like to hit the gravel trails when he can, there was a fair layer of grime to contend with (as you can see by my rinse water bucket photo below). So for all you truck nerds, here a few details.

This 5.3L Sierra 1500 AT4 was purchased new from Demontrond Buick GMC Spring (the dealership group where I'm currently employed) and he traded out of his newer model Ford F-150. Only a week or so after he took ownership, he had a lift kit, 20in XD wheels and off-road tires put on to really give it a mean look. Finished in Satin Steel on the outside with the Ebony interior w/ Saddle piping, this truck is one BEAUTIFUL machine. However, as most truck owners know, big beasty beauties like this don't stay clean for long and this case was no exception.

So on my day off, I drove up to the dealership to collect his baby and off I went on a 6 hour basic detail.

    Process:

    Exterior:
-Front End Cleaned w/ Stoner's Car Care Tarminator/ Bug Remover
-Wheels/ Tires: Ultimate All Wheel Cleaner
-Wheel Wells: All-Purpose Cleaner; Dressed w/ Hyper Dressing
-Washed w/ Gold Class Shampoo/ Conditioner (2 Bucket Wash)
-Clayed w/ Smooth Surface Clay Kit (using soap as lubricant)
-Quick Polish w/ Ultimate Liquid Polish
-2 coats Hybrid Ceramic Liquid Wax
    -Trim dressed w/ Hyper Dressing

    Interior:
Removed all floor mats (pressure washed/ scrubbed rubber parts; vacuumed the carpeted inserts)
Dash/ Seats: Quik Interior Detailer (Matte Finish)
Full interior vacuum (wasn't that dirty to begin with)
Door Jams: Waxed w/ Cleaner Wax
Glass Cleaned w/ Windex Auto Glass

I wasn't able to get interior photos (for privacy reasons), but enjoy the before and after of this absolute beauty of a Sierra (my favorite half-ton truck EVER).

      Nice! Thanks for sharing!

I know a lot of people prefer using car wash suds as a clay lubricant, personally, I prefer to complete the wash, dry the vehicle almost completely, and then go back & clay with a dedicated spray on clay lubricant like our D155 Last Touch or A33 Quik Detailer Mist & Wipe. The car wash suds as clay lubricant process is a bit messy & not as controlled for me, additionally, car wash suds can potentially be too slick, and then the clay will not perform as well. Also, if you happen to miss a spot during the wash, and then run clay over an area which has grime still present, might not go over well. I feel like there is less chance of doing that if wash & dry & then clay.
