Well, I just got done detailing the bejesus out of my Accord.
I have a 1997 Honda Accord LX in Heather Mist Metallic (otherwise known as goldish silver) which has 70,000+ miles on it and is not garage-kept. For the first 5 or so years of its life, it was, however. I still wish it was.
I am a Senior at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut but live in New Jersey for the summer. During the school year, the car is parked in a lot where it gathered most of its dings, scratches, and the like. Oh, how I love those who can't control their own car doors and let them hit mine. I'm thinking about seeing if I can get the larger dings removed, but that's another story.
Anyways, I usually do a major job every Spring and wax the car 2 or 3 more times before winter, more if I have the chance. I clean the interior and wash weekly, however.
I did the following over a span of three days:
- Cleaned the interior (vacuumed, glass cleaned with Eagle One 20/20 Perfect Vision, Quik Interior Detailer applied to proper surfaces)
- Washed with Deep Crystal Car Wash (wheels and tired cleaned with Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner)
- Clayed with Clay Magic
- Washed again
- Used Scratch X on certain areas (worked well on some, not so well on others)
- 1 coat of Deep Crystal System Cleaner
- 3 coats of Deep Crystal System Polish (every coat hid more and released additional brilliance from the paint!)
- 2 coats of NXT
- Applied Gold Class Trim Detailer to all trim
- Applied Gold Class Endurance to tires
I also removed my wipers and repainted them gloss black. They went from a stock flat black to pretty much white as a result of 8 years of weather. The wiper blades themselves were recently replaced with Bosch Micro Excels. In addition, I applied touch-up paint to some small areas which required it and gave the exterior windows a Rain-X treatment.
In terms of non-Meguiar's products used, it has become quite clear that Meguiar's products are easily the best. The Eagle One window cleaner does streak, but I want to finish the bottle before switching to Meguiar's new glass cleaner. I'm excited for the prospect of a streak-free window cleaner. It'll make my life a lot easier! As for the Clay Magic system, no one around here carries Meguiar's system, only Mother's and Clay Magic. I actually really like Clay Magic since it is cheap and gets the job done. Mother's system is expensive and absolute ****, in my opinion. I hope the auto shops around here get a hold of Meguiar's system eventually, since I'd imagine it's even better. I can't justify spending so much on shipping for just that. Maybe someday when I have a bigger order. Replacements would become a hassle, though. Anyways...
I was really, really impressed with the Gold Glass Trim Detailer. I've used many trim detailers over the past few years, including Black Magic's original formula, their new formula, and the Vinyl/Rubber Protectant by Meguiars. I liked Black Magic's original formula but it didn't last long at all and ran a bit. Their new, clear formula runs like crazy when it rains and smells like ****.
The Vinyl/Rubber Protectant didn't pan out well, either. The bottle was the only one on the shelf at Target and looked quite beaten. I bought it though, wanting something good for my trim. The bottle sprayed everywhere and the formula itself didn't last at all on the trim and didn't enhance the color much. I'm not sure if the product itself was old or what the story was, but I was pretty disappointed. I e-mailed Meguiar's and they sent me out a bottle of the Gold Class Trim Detailer. Great!
I was pleased to see the Gold Class Trim Detailer was a white formula and quite thick, similar to the Black Magic of old. It also smelled great. I put it on my trim and had to run an errand quickly (and took another car.) When I came back, the trim was such a dark, deep, glossy black. Incredible! This is EASILY my favorite new product that I've tried in quite some time. I hope the trim stays how it is, but knowing how Endurance lasts, I'm sure this will too.
Anyway, theres my writeup and comments. It's been said so many times but I truly am impressed by Meguiar's products. It's amazing how much innovation and thinking goes into them. All their products are economical, get the job done, and get it done well! The customer service is top-notch, as well. I’m just amazed by the product line and how great each product works and lasts!
My next product to try is the NXT All Metal Polysh for my exhaust and some other areas. It should clean them up quite nicely. I'd also love to clean my engine, but am a bit nervous about doing so since water can't get into certain parts. I would LOVE to get it done, though. I've read a few how-to's and most mention to cover this or that, but not knowing enough about the engine, I am unsure what exactly needs to be shielded from the water. Maybe someone could give me a hand in what needs to be protected if I post up a photo of my engine? That way I'll know for sure what is okay to spray and what isn't!
Following are a few photos from the process. Enjoy, and thanks again Meguiar's!
