  • Paint correction on hood & headlight restoration on toyota

Had a lady contact me and said she has seen my work and wondered if I could clean up her headlights and all the old faded paint on her hood, so she could see driving back from college late at night and the hood is driving her crazy! I went out about a week later and looked at condition of the hood and headlights. OUCH!! The hood had me worried because the rest of the paint wasn't bad. Just the top of the hood and horizontal surface of the fenders.

I looked at the headlights and they was in pretty rough shape as well, I told the lady I could correct the headlights were she could see better and would be safer driving at night but from the feel and looks of the hood I didn't promise anything and told her I just really didn't know if there was anything I could do but I would try a couple things.

Here's the hood and taped off for a test spot.

    Here's a close-up.

The first test I did was with Ultimate Compound by hand and worked in pretty good for about a minute before I seen that a machine was going to have to be used and carefully.

Sorry for the quality of the picture, Got my polishing pad out and my 7424XP set on slow speed with about 10 lbs. pressure. And I was starting to make some progress and looked alittle better, maybe I can correct this. If I don't go through the clear! Being very easy with this hood and takin my time!

Standing back alittle to capture a 50/50 shot. I still don't know how I got it to this condition! Yeah I do, Thanks Meguiars!

    Close-up of the 50/50 shot.

Removed all the dead clear coat or contaminates, now time to go in with the M205 and a polishing pad and see about removing the swirls and scratches.

Now after I went over the hood a couple times (still very worried about maybe going through clear!) with M205 and a polishing pad slow speed and light pressure, letting the product, pad and machine do their thing! Just wanting to clear up the light swirls and bring some gloss and clarity back with a little reflection.

    Selfie

I first did a test spot on the hood and then after I found my process, jumped to the headlights. That's why the pics don't go together but didn't want to jump around with pics.

And the headlight's are just as bad as the hood was, Yellowed and hazed pretty bad.

    Close-up.

I didn't have to much time on this one so I just take the picture after my 2 step with M105 & M205. They did turn out pretty good!

Showing a 50/50 between driver side and passenger.

Both completed and ready to have 2) coats of Merguiars headlight protection applied.

After headlight & hood correction, went over the rest of the body with D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream, Tires & wheel wells dressed with D170 Hyper Dressing

    Side Reflection shot.

Close up of Rear Wheels & Tires.

    Thanks for looking.

    Wow, amazing turnaround!

Do you think the CC on the hood was failing? Any black paint transferred onto your pads?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

      Thanks Davey!

I think maybe that not being washed and waxed regularly and that fact we live here where there's hills and everything from pine tree's, oak tree's all around us tree sap mist is the norm for some of the vehicles not to mention other things as well. But seeing that this is a young lady going to college she just run through the local car wash and never did any type of real cleaning or protecting and the sun's UV rays not to mention the heat from the engine baked all the grud onto the top layer of clear.

No paint transfer, Thank God! But as you could imagine I had to clean my pad twice in my pad washer, not to mention several times with my brush as well as cleaning on the fly using 2 terry towels.

When I delievered back to her, she couldn'd believe how much better the hood and headlights looked. She just stood there for a second, I think she was happy! Hopefully she is taking better care of it. I did apply another application of hydrophobic wax on the hood for her.

Thanks for the kind words Davey!

Ultimate Compound? Just more ammunition against those who scoff at UC because it's "just a consumer product".

            Awesome turn around, Daniel!!!!

Yep!! Ultimate Compound, Since UC is more aggressive then M205 I wanted to use something with a little more bite to it without going to my Flex and polishing pad that would have been to aggressive plus I was afraid that I could possible burn there. Reason for alittle more bite of product but less power of machine. (If that makes since)

Always keep UC on my shelf and for a "consumer product" yeah it is pretty great! Also just started keeping Ultimate Polish on my shelf as well. With some of the repaint vehicles I've been doing lately you can't have enough product on your shelf. If it's 2:00 in the morning and you have a basket case of a repaint your working on and you have to have it finished and back before noon the following day the more Meguiars products you have in your arsenal the better it is for you. and in this case it was Ultimate Polish that helped out where M205 was alittle too aggressive! Go figure.

I've heard some comments about Meguiars consumer products too and that tells me one thing about someones ability or their advice as a detailer.
