  • My 89 Camaro

Hery everyone. Been a while since I posted. Ive every slowly been trying to "correct" the terrible paint job done to my car. I dont know how old the paint job is or who did it, but its definitely not the original paint. The orange peel is bad, and theres clear coat failure on the horizontal surfaces. But i cant afford a paint job so im doing the absolute best i can with my tools and abilites. Heres some pictures of the current condition. Its about 90%. Still some areas that need to be touched up, and the whole passenger side needs to be gone over once more with some UC. But im pleased with the results and it definitely turns heads.

The contrast on most of these are terrible because of the position of the sun when they were taken most likely. The first picture does it justice the most. That was right after applying some NXT Paste Wax (my favorite).

Forgot to mention, I wet sanded with 2000 then I used a DA with med cut pads first with 3M compound to get rid of the bulk of the scratches.

Then i went over with Ultimate Compound, then finished with NXT Wax. Not much to it really just a lot of hours involved and very tedious removing sanding scratches.

                Re: My 89 Camaro

Thanks everyone. Going to finish it pretty much for good this weekend. After that should just need some wax once a month, and a wash/vac once a week.

Black is terrible to keep nice, but if i just use my knowlege and wash it correctly it should stay mostly scratch/swirl free.

We know that pictures can hide a lot of horrors, or make them stand out really bad, but it is interesting to see that first shot after reading your description of the paint. The description sounds absolutely horrible, but the picture makes the car look look spectacular!! We'd love to see some before/after shots of an area that has been wet sanded and buffed out. It is amazing what can be done to even a cheap paint job when proper wet sanding and buffing techniques are employed. While we don't recommend that just anyone go out and do this to just any car, it is a great process to learn for anyone looking to push their detailing skill set to a new level.

Looks like you did an outstanding job!

Hey Michael thank you! Those are all AFTER pictures. The first one is also after being wet sanded and buffed but also has a fresh coat of wax on it so it really shows the deep color.

Unfortunately i never took any before pictures. The paint was only horrible with the texture. It looked bumpy/wavy and some patches were worse than others so it was all random. Some spots were smoother while others were worse so i basically evened out the paint over the entire car with some 2000 grit. Some parts had terrible dry spray which i had to use up to 800 to get rid of and work back up to 2000 which Ultimate Compound took out like a champ. Some spots i used 3m compound but honestly i ended up just using UC because the 3m clogged up my pads way too quickly.

I basically followed your videos after the wet sanding, except instead of 6 passes, i did more like 12 - 16 to completely remove some scratches. Then i started doing the rest of the car up to 3000 grit and it was much easier.

They do in fact look as good as they do in the picture. Ill try to get some up close ones, but the paint is completely scratch free over 90% of the car. You can look at it at any angle in direct sunlight with your eyeball practically touching the paint and see not even the tiniest scratch. I spent many many hours on it haha. I try to wax it once a week to protect it from scratching.

Looks REAL GOOD!! Goes to show that with the right effort and prep, it doesn't really matter if you put in the newest product. Results will still be fantastic!

It is nice to see that generation of Camaro taken care of!

Awesome job. I've been looking for one off and on and that is a clean ride!
