Hi to All Detailing Mates,
After practicing on a hood from Junkyard, with everybit of info i could grasp from Gurus here and some other forums (though gurus are mostly the same
)
I tried to do my best on my 2001 E39 530i. I'll try to explain my attempts step by step, altough my phone battery died during the sessions, so unfortunately not many pics.
First i masked the crevices and some parts which were vulnerable and would end up being a pain in the a.. after the detailing session

A closer look to the finish, you can clearly see the swirls and serious oxidation from years of "wrong washing techniques" and for me more importantly "wrong drying techniques".
Think twice before you get your car washed in a regular car wash

Another glance from distance

In the picture below, i tried using the yellow cutting pad from Lake Country, in combination with m205. It more or less cleared the haze on the paint, but not anywhere close to acceptable imho (e39 clear coat is really hard and keeps asking for wool pad
)
See the difference on the right and left sections:

Then i stepped up and increased the abbrasiveness level to the Meguiar's light cutting WOOL Pad (yellowish) and combined it with m105
Come to the feast

I don't know what you call this in English but in Turkish slang it is called "rabbit ears" (my hand behind my head doing the finger expression)

Another pic of the hood

Below are some pictures taken in the daylight

Check the discount at Mc D.. sometime

I didn't dress up the engine and the bay, just cleaned it. I' ll put on some make up on it soon

For the whole project, i merely used Makita 9227cb rotary buffer. I believe i did it without noticable holograms, except the one on the drivers panel i saw under direct sunlight(God beam
). I was very exhausted, i guess i overlooked it.
For the paint correction, i used the speed setting at 3.5 (1800-2000 rpm) and for the polishing and finishing mostly at 2 (900rpm).
Though some ppl told me to do the polishing with the lowest setting, i don't think you can do a healthy polishing at the lowest setting (500rpm) Maybe the finishing could be though.
I' ll check again and do some parts i overlooked (the hologram on the door) with the black finessing pad, what do you guys say?
BTW: this is my first serious project, i just practiced on a hood from the junk yard and took my own risk on my own car. Fortunately i did it without any serious damage.
Keep on rocking
Emre
