  • January Detail & Test Drive of the RUPES LHR21ES

Here's some pics of a recent tidy up I completed on my daily driven 2009 Holden Calais V.

Apart from regular washing and a vigilant eye for anything nasty on the paintwork, I hadn't given the car any more than a couple of Ultimate Liquid Wax applications since 2011.

I use the two bucket method with grit guards when washing, so I was keen to see how the paint was going to look under the scrutiny of a more involved detail.

I washed/dried and then began by claying all the paint and glass with Meguiar's consumer clay and Last Touch diluted 1:1 to the clay lube ratio.

On close inspection under my harsh lights I was really surprised that most panels with the exception of the hood were only subject to light swirls. The hood had a few light swirls and a couple of heavier marks which were probably caused by its daily use. Big tick to the two bucket wash system and my gentle touch!

I taped off a few of the delicate areas and set to work with my new Rupes LHR21ES. I hadn't used this machine before and only bought it just prior to Christmas so I was really keen to explore its potential.

A test spot on the hood revealed that a Meguiars W8207 yellow polishing pad with M205 was really able to carve through the defects and leave the surface LSP ready! I was surprised because I've had to use M105 to remove similar marks on this paint in previous details. The large throw of the Rupes machine and almost zero downward pressure was working wonders! I was impressed!

I worked panel by panel, following the W8207 with a W9207 finishing pad on a slower speed setting to further bring up the gloss levels. The W9207 always impresses me when used with M205. It's ability to give the paint a fresh and wet look is unmatched.

For the LSP, this time I chose to use Gold Class Carnuaba Plus Liquid. I've had issues on this car with Ultimate Liquid Wax (& Ultimate Detailer as well) leaving smears and blotches. I've tried all the possible solutions to no avail. And when I say all, yep, I mean all. This paint just doesn't like them- plain and simple. I will mention these two products only give me problems on this car so it must be something this car doesn't like because those products can work like a charm on the multitude of other cars I've used them on. No problems at all with the Gold Class Carnuaba Plus! Went on and came off really smoothly!

The following pics are after correction. I didn't take before pics because of the defects being mild. Also note: the sun ran and hid behind an overcast sky, so not a lot of sunlight in the pics, but I'm sure you will get the idea of how it came out.

The project came out really good.

I always admire the depth (3D effect) of paint after M205 treatment.

Try Ultimate Paste Wax on that paint next time, it never let me down.

Stellar work! I really want a Rupes! It's just that $400 is a lot to swallow!

Thanks Greg! M205 never ceases to amaze me with its results.

I was going to try the paste Ultimate Wax, but usually prefer a liquid. Now the Gold Class has worked so well I may stick with it for a while.

          Thanks CreamPuff!

It is pricey no doubt, but the effort it saves with both the speed of correction and reduced physical effort from no downward pressure has me sold.
