  • Premier Auto Detailing by Evan: 91 Trans Am with Soft Black Paint

So I was contacted to tackle this 91 Pontiac Trans Am. Upon arrival I found this car swirled out and rough to the touch. Being that it was black well it looked better in the shade than the sun but thats what I was there for.

I got the wash all done and the claying finished. Well when I stated claying I got a surprise that I wasn't expecting…… SOFT SOFT PAINT!!!! So you will see in the photos below my speedy prep towel marred the **** out of there paint and so begins my great day.

After getting the car dried and tapped of time for a test spot. Well lets just say I am glad I had all my polishers. I tried my Flex today with my hybrid pads and about everything I tried and every combo I could not get this paint to finish down at all. After lots of trial and error I finally got a combo that worked:

Rupes and polishing pad with Sonax Perfect finish followed by M205 on a LC hydrotech pad on my GG6"

    Here are some photos:

On to the better end of these photos:

And that concludes the "Wonderful" Black Trans Am

And you survived to talk about it

That may have been your biggest feat today!

    Great job Evan.

Hahaha I gave it everything I had. I guess I needed a challenge given to me but I love a challenge and a surprise one at that.

        good save.
now you know to not use the towel on this car, BMW too, they will never see rubber.
Test spot your rubber too. This will happen again if your not carful.

You have a 21 Bigfoot? So try a MF Cutting Pad and 205, it's worked wonders on 1,000's of cars. It would have saved you a lot of time. The BF has amazing cutting power, tap into that.

Was not expecting this paint to be so soft. I knew my MF pads would have been perfect but left those at home because I wanted to use my Flex on this but ended up going with the Rupes and no MF pads go figure.

            Good work

Man that thing has got some heavy orange peel going on in some spots!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I saw that too. Thinking it may have been a repaint on the passenger door? The before photo the door looks a lot different than the fenders.

Yea most of it has been repainted. Bumpers by one person who did a great job, the other areas like the hood

The old bird came out looking great! But man oh man, the difference in texture between these two panels is shocking:

We're curious about this process, too: "Rupes and polishing pad with Sonax Perfect finish followed by M205 on a LC hydrotech pad on my GG6"

What was the quality of the finish following the Sonax and what did you gain by following with M205? Our curiosity stems from so often reading about people using these two polishes the other way around.

Michael this paint was very tricky to work with. While the PF did a great job at correcting the finish was less than desired with a lot of hazing so I gave M205 a shot on my GG6 with the polishing pad and I evnd up starting on speed three then going down to speed 2 with little to no pressure and low and behold I was able to get a finished result that I was happy with. I did a number of test spots with different products different pads and nothing works and finshed down right not even Menzerna SF4000 on a finishing pad so go figure.

As for the orange peel it was bad and I pointed that out to the owner and explained to him what it was from and how it can be fixed. He wasnt too concerned about it but none the less educating customers is a great thing.
