  • 2011 FJ Cruiser

Yesterday I got to detail my first non-crossover-based SUV. It was a 2011 FJ Cruiser which was with its second owner. It was in a typical neglected form - swirls and residue wax from previous attempts to detail the vehicle properly.

I used D151 followed up with Ultimate wax. The paint was fairly easy to work with. My only problem was the D151 powdered up quite fast because of the heat and low humidity yesterday (never had that problem before). Well, onto the pics -

before I started, I masked off all the trim, and I found that the previous wax job done stained the lower door trim:

all taped up - I also taped off the wiper base and the other vents on the leading edge of the windshield:

    nope...

It took me about 6 hours yesterday. it was longer because I was having issues with the heat drying up the D151.

Sorry to bring up an old thread again. I have recently bought a black FJ Cruiser myself and it has similar swirls like the one you work on. I'm a complete noob at detailing but very eager to learn. I'm going through the forum to gather as much info as I can before I tackle the paint correcting project. When prepping the truck for polish, which areas must I tape off? I noticed your tapes and was wondering about the hood and the front grill. And can I polish the silver door handles and side mirrors too? I have a roof rack also. Would it be difficult to get around it when polishing? Thanks for any advice and input.

i didnt tape off the grille, but i taped off the plastic vents on the hood. i did polish the side mirrors since they were silver painted. not sure about the roof rack.
