  • '69 Nova Drag/Race Car Polished with 2 million year old wax, aka Black Wax

This customer got this car with an unknown repaint that looked like gas was spilled all over it. He tried to fix it himself by hand, immediately gave up and called me. After a quick evaluation and a text pic to the paint whisperer it was decided this was oxidization.
After waterless wash and Speedy prep towel I broke out my new DeWalt rotary polisher, wool pad, 105 and polished it for 12 hrs. Now this being a race car we just wanted to "make it better". I could have polished this for another 12 hrs. but that wasn't in his budget so this car isn't perfect but a heck of alot better.
After polishing and another waterless wash I used a Flex, Meg's yellow pad and the new Black Wax that is made out of fossilized wax derived from brown coal. So cool. I had high expectations for this wax and I didn't disappoint.

    Here are the before pictures:

of course there was water spots all over the front hood and fender

I never had this problem before: Tire rubber from burnouts on the strip

A little Tarminator soaked for a few mins took this rubber off with no problem

The paint had no reflection at all

50/50 shot after a few passes with the wool pad/105

    My tool for the job.

This wasn't single stag paint nor a Clear Coat/Base Coat. So enamel? Acrylic? Don't really know what kind of paint this was. A little color was transfered to my pads but not alot.

Switching pad/heads to fit into the tight places

    After a few passes

    That's better!!

    Before:

    After:

Here is what the paint looked like 2 days later. I had already started to oxidize again!!!

So here's the Black Wax and the Flex set up I used.
A lot of you are always asking; "what is prepping the pad?" Well in this case I used 4 drops at first and then 2 smaller drops as needed per X' sections.

    Action shot!

I was hoping the polish would be enough to remove the buffer marks I had and IT DID!!!
    Here are the buffer marks/holograms

This was a shot just after a few passes with Black Wax! I was very impressed with it cutting/polishing abilities. A few more passes and the paint was perfect.

Here is the amount of product I was using per section, only a tiny bit did the trick just fine.

So I only used maybe half an oz? Not alot of product to get this car all purdy.

Behold! The beauty of 105 and 2 million year old wax!

    Looks good.

What's with the "2 million year old wax" references? lol

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

It has Montan wax in it which is derived from brown coal which is fossilized plant wax from 2 million years ago.
        Here's a link on it:
Montan wax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Montan wax, also known as lignite wax or OP wax, is a hard wax obtained by solvent extraction of certain types of lignite or brown coal

Great work. What is up with the paint oxidizing so fast?

I'm not sure. This job took 3 days. on the 3rd day when I went to polish/wax it I seen the rainbow color come back. So I'm calling it oxidization, I could be wrong. I just don't know what kind of paint this is. As you can see in the after pics the rainbow color was there in the paint. So I think this "black" has alot of color in it.

Great job BTW. And thanks for the history lesson on the wax. I admire your detailing work.

Your action shot includes you detailing in direct sunlight. Isn't this a sin?

Thank you very much for the Kudos, I try. I call my business a Practice, like a Dr. because it's always evolving and I'm always learning. So complements are nice to hear.
Detailing in sunlight is necessary. The sun is the ultimate "swirl finder". I was removing buffer marks so I needed the to use the sun.
This was in the morning about 75 in the shade, but still the paint was hot, maybe 90 degree's?.
Working direct sun light isn't a problem unless it's scorching. But I always check my paint work in the sun. I pull my awning to expose the paint then put it back to work in the shade.

I'm not doubting you, but can I ask how you know it has Montan wax in it?

I couldn't see that on the product description.
