  • Chevy Silverado, Paint was "Like a Rock"

I didn't know Chevy's slogan "Like a Rock" applied to their paint.
This truck took everything I had to get it corrected. The paint was the hardest I've come across.
Literally speed 6, MF cutting pad, M105 and full pressure was the only way to correct this paint.
13 hrs of polishing and it was done, well the outside was.
The inside was difficult too, the "felt like" seats held on to every dog hair. Man I had to scrape forever with the pumas rock to get it looking new again.
So 23 hrs later I was Finlay done.

Here's the before pics with all the scratches that were all over every inch of this truck.

Here's just a shot of the dirty rim

    Some scratches

    50/50 shot

    That's better!

Here it is all done and shine

    Rim shot!

        Great work!

Looks like there's still a few RIDS left, but big improvement..

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Thanks, and you will. The art of detailing takes alot of practice. You'll get there soon.

Thanks and yes there was some RIDS left, also this truck had alot of chips in the lowers. I recommended close to full correction due to that fact. It's in so much better shape then it was and my customer was very happy.

Great work, I had same situation with a GMC. After that job I ordered M101 for UK and Surbuf pads, ready for next hard paint.

Good to know I'm not the only one.
I have 101 and surbuff Micro Fingers pad. 105 and an MF pad worked better.
101 was way to dusty and didn't come close to 105's cutting ability.
Stoops recommended, and this isn't for armatures, was a Maroon pad on a rotary/105 and moveing fast. I would have done this had he got back to me in time, but he was busy. This is going to be my solution the next time I come across rock hard paint.

Re: Chevy Silverado, Paint was "Like a Rock"

Dealing with paint that is that crazy hard is a real pain in the neck, and a heck of a challenge. The black 3 Series BMW we wrote about in this thread had similar paint, and even M105 on the DAMF system did very, very little to improve it. A wool pad on the rotary quickly removed the swirls but also created its own fresh set of marks, but a foam cutting pad on the rotary was literally magic. That BMW was knocked out in about 6 hours that way, but anything else would have been easily double that time, if not triple. And even though at some point you feel like throwing a brick at the stupid vehicle for being so obstinate, there is no greater feeling of satisfaction than making the darn thing finally submit to your will and force a proper shine back out of it.

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do to get the job done! In this case, given the horrid mess you started with and the final result, we'd say you did a killer job. A couple of RIDS? Hey, on a truck with plenty of stone chips and other scrapes, and that is most definitely NOT a show vehicle, big whoop (and no, Davey, we are NOT picking on you for your comment about the RIDS - honest!!). To take paint that hard, with that level of defects as a starting point on a vehicle that big and end up with money like this:

Awesome. This shot really shows off the depth and gloss of the paint now. The highlights over the wheel arches and that almost opalescent look to it is just killer. Love it!!

Nice work! Hope my truck doesn't have paint that hard, there were some dealer installed swirls on mine when I bought it...hope I can wheel them out easily in the next month or two.
