I recently got a call to detail one of my dream cars. I didn’t hesitate to take on the job and I was extremely stoked to work on this amazing machine. When the car was delivered to me, it already looked very shiny and only minimal swirls were visible and the car was already in great shape to begin with. The car only had 6,400 miles. I thought to myself that this will be an easy one but boy I was wrong.

    Before:

    Dirty Wheels

    Dirty Exhaust Tips

    Wash:

    Sonax doing its thing

    Cleaning the calipers

    Cleaning the wheel barrels

    Cleaning the wheel wells

Gunk coming off the wheel wells

    Cleaning the exhaust tips

Glaze or oils being removed by the citrus wash

    Cleaning the gas tank

It looked like the dealer used some type of glaze because of the oils I was removing while washing the car. In addition, the mediocre beading I was getting before the wash was completely killed after washing the car. After drying the car, I was greeted with the true condition of the paint. It was definitely worse than I originally saw but it still wasn’t bad. Here’s a picture of the clay after doing half of the hood:

As you can see, there wasn’t much bonded contaminants on the car. I was thrilled about this because claying didn’t really take long.

After claying the car, I immediately got into polishing. I started out with Meguiar’s D300 using 5” and 3” MF correcting pads. Here are some pictures through the entire process:

All taped up and ready to go

Using the D300 created a very slight haze on the paint. This was more evident on the roof - I don’t know why. In order to create the perfect finish, I knew I had to follow it up with a finishing polish. The weapon of choice: Meguiar’s M205. I love this stuff. Here are some pictures after I treated the car with M205:

After polishing the car, I then applied Meguiar’s Ultimate Paste Wax. This wax looks gorgeous on black! Here are some pictures. You be the judge.

    Polished the exhaust tips too

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Nicely done. Looks great. Did you spend more time with the Flex or the DA?

18 hours with a black Corvette seem about right. Especially washing off previously used products as carefully as you did.

              Very nice work, Marc.

The Corvette looks stunning. M205 is a nice product to use after D300 before waxing. It definitely gave this black paint extra wet look.

              Top detailed work.

Thank you, Dave! It's still longer than I would like it to be.

Thank you so much for the compliments, Greg! I agree, M205 works beautifully and it cleared up the hazing created by D300. It made the paint look more wet.

A great write up on a very thorough detailing project, Marc - way to go!! You really transformed the look of that Vette and the "after" shots in the garage show that paint looking a mile deep and dripping wet. Gorgeous!

                      Nice work Marc!

Vette paint is very scratch sensitive but also very hard when it comes to correction......as you found out. Judging from the number of pix I think you really liked that car! Too bad you had to give it back. I sometimes hate seeing the car leave after I've spent hours making it look really nice.

Looks like the D300/MF was enough after all!

Did you have to do more than one pass with the D300/MF to get full correction?

Great job Marc. As for the 18hrs part I think it takes as long as it needs to take to get the job done right so don't feel like you're doing something wrong. Being thorough takes time and it shows. Great job!!

Thanks a lot Bob!! You nailed it! I felt the paint to be on the moderate to soft side because removing some glue residue was causing some scratches. LOL! I want to buy a C6 now as a daily driver. That's how much i fell in love with this car. You have a nice Vette yourself.

Thanks a lot, Chad!!! WOOHOO!! D300 rocks and it's so easy to use! I would say around 40-50% of the paint required a second pass to fully remove the swirls. They were probably too deep. It left a considerable amount of hazing but M205 quickly cleared it up. This D300/M205 combo may be my new favorite.
