  • Headlight restoration 2001 Frontier

    Hi all,

Contributed my experience using the urethane+mineral spirits sealant to another forum, so I thought I would share here, too. My brother in law's 2001 Nissan Frontier is in pretty rough shape- we just compounded and polished the dullness away and are finishing the black plastic panels with Forever Black.

He tried to treat the headlights about a year ago with the 3M headlight kit and didn't get much improvement. I used Meg's unigrit to wetsand the headlights- 800, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 and then applied the urethane mixture (no compounding in the hopes that the urethane will adhere better to the slightly scuffed surface). I like the results and expect the finish to hold up well.

Thanks! It's just 1 part Spar Urethane Clear Gloss (Home Depot, Lowe's or Menards should carry it), mixed with 1 part odorless mineral spirits. Mix in a cup and I applied it with a staining sponge- you could also use a lint-free shop towel or even an old microfiber that you didn't want touching your paint anymore (it would be toast after using it this way).

Nice! Now you can follow it up with Meg's new Headlight Protectant.

Urethane mixed with mineral spirits, maybe I am wrong here but I think that any clear coat like urethane oil based will turn yellow with time?
