  • 2 Company Vans Detailed

Hey guys, if anyone remembers my original post for help on this, well here's the results.

Let me first apologize for lack of pictures, and quality. Here's my excuses
-My boss hired a new driver a couple weeks before him (new driver) and I did this today. He was taking the vans home occasionally to do some interior work... also washed the exterior of both vans. I do not blame him though, the inside of these vans were absolutely filthy. Imagine the dashboard and controls all covered in a thin layer of just this disgusting grime. Pop bottles all over the place, metal chips all over the floor, papers stuffed in the center glove compartment. So yeah, I don't have that great of pictures, it is something I need to work on. At least my detailing, as well as his, was successful (we think).
    -Cell Phone pictures
-We did not have a good portable light source. Used florescent lights on ceiling to the best of abilities.

    By the way, our process:
    1. Wash at the local quarter car wash and clayed at the same time.
    2. D151 - I was very pleased with this. It was a very thick substance, but it was easy on / easy off. Did a great job clarifying the paint. I can not comment about defect removal as this is not even close to our goal.
    3. Used this stuff called "Super Glaze HD" (Did not care for product at all, given to me from a friend).

    Interior shot before:

After: (Using APC+ to my custom mixing level, haha. This stuff works great! First time ever using, this will be my new "go-to" stuff. Will order a jug for home )

(Before D151) Probably not a useful picture, but maybe you can see how the light is just kind of a blurr in the reflection.

Before D151, and after. I am sure you can tell which area was polished and which wasn't.

    This is before D151.

Left: After D151. Right: Before D151

Another 50/50 shot, Left side after D151, right side before D151.

95% sure this was before D151

    Afters:

Is it me or does the reflection get clearer towards the back of the van?

Well that is about it, sorry guys, I know it's rather disappointing in the pictures department.

Nice detail on the vans. Not something you see posted everyday.

Great job on the vans Nick. So how was your D151 experience? Is that all you used for paint correction?

Haha thats alright. Would you have any tips on using it Don? I think you were one of the people who didn't like it though if I remember correctly. I was initially doing it on speed 6 with my GG6 D/A and then towards the end of my working time I brought it down to 3 and made another pass or 2. I wonder if that is a good technique or not with an all-in-one?

              Nice job on the vans.

              D151 is my favorite AIO.

D151 is a SMAT product so you can maintain constant down pressure.
If you don't plan to top it with a finishing wax you could let it dry and then wipe it off (after entire car is finished) or you could re-apply D151 - switching to less aggressive pad in step 2 and lowering speed.

Ok cool, I did not know it could sit on there for a while. I wonder if its actually worth doing a second coat with a finishing pad; I suppose it would further refine the finish?

                  That's right.
You could even re-apply products like M105 and M86 with a finishing pad/ lighter pressure to further refine paint surface. It all depends how those products finish/ meet your expectations after first application.

Super Glaze used to be a better product before the Turtle bought out The Wax Shop. I first saw it in the 70's at drag strips where many were using it on dragsters between almost every round because it left the finish super-slick and was so easy to use. Easy on & off, leaves a nice shine, beads like crazy, has real slick feeling and it can be used on shiney, smooth black trim as it doesn't stain. Longevity is almost nil though. Years ago we used to top it with 845 with excellent results.

Keep that bottle as it's a still a useful product. Before TW changed the formula and made it smell like coconuts it smelled like kerosene. The carriers were obviously petroleum based as it removes tar as you use it. Especially handy for cleaning up coated or painted wheels as it removes road film, tar and crud and leaves a slick shiney finish. You definitely want to top it with something with better longevity though. Good product for a real quick shine-up when longevity isn't a consideration. Also a good product for spot cleaning between full details.

The Wax Shop also made a light cleaner called Safe Cut. It removed light defects and when used with a finishing pad really amped up the gloss. Haven't seen it in years.
