  • Detailed: 1997 Honda Accord White

    Paint Correction:
    Meguiar's G110v2
Meguiar's Ultimate Compound / GG Orange Pads
    Craftsman 500W Halogen Lights

My manager recently acquired a very clean 1997 Honda Accord that only had 1 owner and all maintenance records intact. This car will be for his daughter. It was such a great deal and you can tell that the car was clean. He asked me to inspect the paint afterwards, Under the intense Arizona sun, I couldn't really see that much as the paint was flushing out the sunlight. I thought the paint was in good condition with minimal swirls but boy I was wrong!

He tried doing the detail himself. He recently bought a Griot's Garage polisher kit that was on sale from Amazon. It came with a minor polish and he tried to buff it himself. He had various problems such as not removing the swirls/defects and it was very hard to remove the polish residue. After doing the detail with minimal success, he stopped after one panel. The next day, he asked me if I could teach him how to properly buff the car when I'm free. My eyes lit up as my boss told me. I was so excited to hear this. I was like of course! It'll be my pleasure to help and teach you how to buff your ride. Well I was busy and occupied the past 3 weekends but we made time to do this detailing session tonight.

While he had his GG6, I brought my Meguiar's G110v2. Since he only had a fine polish from Griot's. I told myself that maybe we need something heavier than that in case the defects were severe. Enter Ultimate Compound. I haven't used this product yet because I have M105 and D300. I picked it up just to see what the hype and rave is all about. Mike Stoops always uses this in his Saturday Class Demos so it should be a great product. I also brought my own halogen lighting in order to see the defects properly.

The car had already been washed and clayed prior to our arrival.

I started by doing a test panel to see how Ultimate Compound works and at the same time, teach my manager the ropes on how to properly use a D/A polisher, prime the pad, clean the pad on the fly, etc. He picked it up really easy and after one panel, I let him loose and we started buffing the car in tandem. While I was happy that he learned how to properly polish the car (You know the saying "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."), I was happier with the results I was getting from Ultimate Compound!!! This stuff is amazing considering how cheap it is and how one can easily obtain it OTC. This removes defects like no other and I now understand why it's the product of choice for Saturday classes in Meguiar's HQ. It works so well with a foam polishing pad that it removes most defects after the 2nd section pass! It also finishes down the paint LSP ready but this might not be true for softer black paints. The only thing I didn't like about this is that it dusted but it wasn't as bad as M105. But overall, I think it's a great product with such a great price! You can't go wrong with Ultimate Compound. If you haven't tried it yet, you're missing out.

I'm going to stop talking now and let the pictures do the talking... Please keep in mind that these are just after using Ultimate Compound. No polishes or LSPs were used yet.

It was getting late (9:40PM) and I still had to drive 80 miles to get back home so I stopped there. We were able to finish the compounding step. Before I left, I taught him how to apply DC pure polish and how to apply NXT 2.0 or any LSP of his choice. He was very happy with the results achieved from the initial compounding step. I gave him the bottle of Ultimate Compound for him to use in his future defect removal since he now knows how to properly use his D/A polisher. Who knows he might turn into a detailing addict like all of us here.

I'm sorry there are no after shots of the whole car as the detail wasn't finished when I left.

What do you guys think? Any comments are welcomed.

    Thanks for looking!

Looks like it turned out very nice. Little surprised this was your first go round with Ultimate Compound. Now you see why it is the Breakfast of Champions and rental cars galore on Saturdays.

      Good job!

You get props for being able to capture the swirls in the pics!

Thanks David! Yeah I'm surprised myself. I thought it was inferior to M105 before so I didn't even bother trying it out. However, I admit that I'm completely wrong as this is good stuff and a great product for the price.

Thank you Don! I'm also happy with how the reflection shots came out. Hope Mike Stoops will like them as well.

For about $10 / bottle, it's really hard to find anything that's a better value...

              Well done, Marc.

Ultimate Compound is a true compound capable of serious defect removal. I'm glad you had a good first experience using it.

              Nice 50/50 shots.

Nice job Marc! Thanks for sharing. I have a steady customer with the same exact car. I like doing it cause the white really pops after a good detailing.

Honda paint is usually pretty soft which makes paint correction fairly workable with a more mild setup.

What speed did you run the DA at?

                  Results look great!

I agree. Also, you can get them locally when you run out of polish.

Thank you Andy! I really hope that the owner notices a difference. White, silver or any light color makes it really hard to pop.

Thank you Chethewitt! I was using the exact same settings as Mike Stoops, speed 5.

Thanks a lot Nick! I appreciate that. I was amazed at how well the pictures came out. The paint was just so bad that the camera was able to capture the dramatic difference even on white paint.
