  • 1965 Mercedes

Alright. So had the opportunity to detail a 1965 Mercedes. This is what I'm talking about. The car belonged to the same client who I did the Black Volvo for.

Anyway, let's get right on to the pics.

This is what the client was using to wash it before I beckoned him to stop. Actually, his 11 year old daughter was washing it this way. Good old Palmolive and dirty towels.

So, the client originally just wanted a cleaner/wax treatment because he only wanted to spend $100. However, I wanted to impress him and anybody else who saw the car so I went ahead and did a 2 step process to really bring out the gloss. My G110v2 was half-broken at this point. I was able to hold the connection in the back at a certain angle and the machine would function. However, about 90% of the way through the project, it stopped working for good. The remainder of the car was hit with a W7204 pad by hand with Ultimate Compound. The 4" pads are great for handwork actually. I might do a write-up on them soon to show how I use them by hand.

-Hit the car with Ultimate Compound on a W8207 pad at speed 5
-The paint was single stage so I applied M07 by hand to the entire car using a Hi-Tech Applicator (comes with Gold Class Wax, NXT 2.0, etc.)
-Applied Gold Class Carnauba Plus by hand
-Dressed the tires with Endurance Tire Spray
-Lightly polished all chrome and aluminum with Mag and Aluminum Polish with a terry cloth

The car is a garage queen and the owner said he has probably driven it less than 1000 miles in the 20 years he's owned it. That's why I went with Gold Class as its oils give the paint a deep glow and the protection factor isn't as important as the car is barely driven except to shows.

I didn't do a whole lot with the interior as a lot of it is original and the owner said he really liked the patina and some of the dirt in the leather. He likes it when old cars show their age a bit.

-Cleaned all leather and vinyl (almost everything but the seats which were vinyl) with Meguiars Gold Class Leather and Vinyl Cleaner
-Conditioned all leather with Meguiars Gold Class Leather Conditioner
    -Vacuumed the interior
-Wiped down the glass with Stoner's Invisible Glass

And after all is said and done, here is the finished product. The owner wanted the roof off. Man it looks way nicer without the roof!

Some Gold Class Carnauba Plus setting up.

So, she is not perfect but for $100 and 7 hours of work, she looks a whole lot better. She shines great and will definitely turn some heads!

    Anyway, thanks for looking.

You do like challenges, don't you!!

With a D/A acting up and staring at single stage, I woulda passed on that one.

You've done a very nice job. That poor armrest looks like it's worn through or grown mold.

Nice work Shawn! That definitely is a cool looking car.

I see the UC didn't remove all the swirls? Some of them must have been pretty deep...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

          Nice project, Shawn.

          Beautiful car. Anti-aging classic look.

          Well done, looks sweet.

Shawn, this goes without saying, but FANTASTIC job! You're like me in that you give the client extra. I think your decision to use UC was perfect. I use that most of the time on jobs that need some correction but not perfection. It's so easy to use compared to the dusting of 105. Great job! Too bad you don't live closer or I could help you with details LOL.BTW, you are absolutely right, that MB looks 100% better without that hideous hardtop.

                    Thanks David!

I never turn down a challenge! lol

Working on single stage was really fun actually. The paint reacted really well to M07 Show Car Glaze. I now know why people use it on single stage.

The client did not want perfection in the car and only wanted a cleaner/wax at first. But, I decided to throw in a little extra for him since this was a garage queen.

UC did remove quite a bit of the swirling though.

It really is a beautiful car.

                    Thanks Andy!

Yeah, the car needs a new paint job to really bring it back but right now, the paint is shiny again.

The hardtop looks alright but not nearly as nice as the convertible look. It looks like a whole different car without that hardtop.

Shawn, you made (to me) one homely car into a true head turner. Kinda like 'that' girl in Jr Hi...then she turned 21...a total knockout.

                      Good job!
