  • Honda Accord Headlight Restoration

Well, we had a customer come into the Honda dealership where I work for some service work, and she asked if we could do anything about her headlights. Usually when there is a question about something detail related, I'm the one that people come to, so naturally, I was asked to fix her headlights. Her car was at the dealer for a couple of days, so I had the chance to look at the headlights before doing the work. Now, the only real "headlight kit" I have is the Meguiar's consumer headlight kit, and I knew after seeing these headlights that it would take more than PlastX to correct them. Ahhh, what to do?! Time to do a little experimenting. I don't know if anybody has done this yet or not, but I used M105 with a 3 inch microfiber DA cutting pad to clear up the oxidation. Perfect! I sealed them afterwards with Rejex. Have a look!

    both sides done

They turned out very well. I was quite impressed. I think I could have given the passenger side headlight probably 2 more passes, but it was OK. Only took about 25 minutes to correct and seal both headlights, including the time it took me to go to the mechanic's area to use compressed air to blow off the pad (we don't have compressed air in the detail area). I don't think the customer has come to pick up her car as of yet, but I'm sure she will be very pleased with it. Thanks for looking!

Great results! Would I be able to expect similar results with a 3" MF cutting pad and a different product like Ultimate Compound or the D300 in the MF kit?

Wow, I am really surprised with the results. I would have expected something that badd to require wet sanding and a wool pad. You didn't have any real close-up shots, were the headlights pitted and scaly or just yellow?

They were somewhat pitted as well, but nothing I could do about that. I think this particular Accord was an '03 - '05 model. The car itself wasn't in horrible shape - about average for what is probably a daily driver. Swirl marks, RIDS, rock chips, and the like. I doubt the owner was too concerned with the pitting, and I was just asked to clear up the yellowing, which I did. Had I charged for this, I probably would have quoted a price of $20 - $25, which would be about right for 20-25 minutes worth of work, with no wetsanding or multiple steps.

Probably. I had/have M105, UC, and D300 in my arsenal of compounds, and I just picked M105 because I knew it would more than handle the job. I did bring a 3 inch Lake Country white polishing along with M205 in case M105 left any hazing that would have to be cleared, but in this case, I didn't need it.
