  • First time using DA/Work in progress

    Ok,

This is my first time using my 7424XP.

Decided to start with my girlfriend's Ford Fiesta ( brazilian model ). It is her daily use car, 09 months old, parked outside night and day, washed one or two times per month at max, and yes its paint was absolutely trashed.

Given the depth of swirls I choosed Ultimate Compound to achieve best results.

Before pics after wash and clay except the first hood.

    Hood

    Close-up

    passenger side

    passenger rear

    C-pillar

Final Results after UC/Yellow pad buffing for two minutes at least and NXT 2.0/Black pad:

Hood. Divided into four buffed for two minutes at speed 4,5 each part. It is unbelievable that after compounding swirls insists to defy me.

    Passenger rear

    Passenger front

Opinions are welcome. I know there's a lot to improve!

If those pesky swirls are still holding on here, try shrinking your work area down. Dividing the hood into 4 sections may still be a bit large - try 6. Even then, keep the tool at speed 5 for defect removal and use a good bit of pressure. You want the pad to continue rotating, but it does not need to rotate quickly. Put a small piece of tape on the back of the backing plate to better show the rotation, then use enough downward pressure on the pad to stop rotation, then slowly ease up so that the pad begins to spin again. Once it's spinning, even slowly, you've got your pressure right. That should take care of things for you.

Otherwise, you've made enormous progress, first time user or not, so you should be happy and proud! Keep it up!!

Congratulations Rodrigo! You really pulled it off!

What were your impressions about the tool ? Did you use the little washer that comes with the PC ?

        Great work!

Even if you didn't all the swirls out, the car is vastly improved!

                Hello Tafner!

                Thank you very much!

How is the holiday in Rio?

As you can see, the Porter Cable is doing the job very well. My first choice was G110v2 because it is more powerful and comes with w68DA. Unfortunatelly it seems to be out of stock in everywhere. I did not regret. The 7424xp is easy to use, not heavy, ergonomic and comes with a pad that you can cover up with a MF bonnet for wax removal purposes. It is all we need as hobbyists like us. You have to buy separetely the w68DA if you want to use the Softbuffs 2.0. We do not have warranty in Brazil that is the only bad new in my opinion. Can't remember the standard voltage in Rio but the 7424xp is available only in 110v.

Not sure about "washer", but if you meant the dust collector, it is not part of regular 7424xp, it is an accessory and I do not have. Cannot tell about.

                Regards!

                  Yes, Mike. You're right.
When I did the doors and specially the C pillar, I noticed the goal on hood was not reached probably because I've tried to cover a too large area. Pillar is a small area and on that sector the swirls disappeared almost completelly presenting a result closer to perfection. Plus, the starting point was the hood so as the work is progressing I am getting familiar to the tool.
Since I have only 2 pads for compounding, I decided to give them a rest and continue tomorrow. Have two doors, bumpers and fenders to finish and I will do the job in smaller sections tomorrow paying attention on the rotation of the DA. The hood and roof are already waxed and altough not perfect they are good for the first time specially considering the previous condition. They can be fully corrected on next detailing session.
And since all these experience are new to me I was worried in applying more pressure and speed. Perhaps it sounds stupid but during the entire job I was concerned in not forcing the tool. Newbies...

                  Thank you for the adviCes

Black cars are the best! Keep it up, it looks great. Make sure you update when you do the 2nd session.

Don't worry, I was a little scared about pressure and all of that too but then I remembered the only way you can really kill the paint with this D/A is if you throw it at the car
2007 Honda Civic Si - the pretty thing
2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII - the fun thing
1995 Honda Civic DX - the ugly thing

Nothing stupid at all. In fact, quite the opposite. If you start with an easy approach the worst thing that happens is you have to go back and do a bit more. Big deal. If you go way overly aggressive and cause some damage, then you're got a serious problem on your hand. We think you took 100% the right approach - well done!

Great suggestion. Sometimes it's very difficult to tell how fast the pad is spinning.

Ok, job done. Here are some shots from today.

                          C pillar driver side

                          drivers door

                          remember those tiny swirls?
I did the hood again. This last time with 205 since the heavy job was already performed by UC. Re-waxed with NXT 2.0

Thanks to all friends. Nothing would be possible without what I learned here.

That black color is really deep now!! where did you get that 205 ?

Congratulations on the job well done!

(The little washer that I was talking about was the one that came with the manual and the wrench, it should go just before the backing plate.)

Did you tape your plastic trims ? How was the splatter when working with the PC ?
