  • 2008 Audi A5 - DA MF system

This was my first DA Microfiber system use and I can say I learned a lot about this new system. It is FANTASTIC! Very easy to use, wipe off is a breeze.

Will do a separate review of the system, so look for that.

    Process:
    Exterior -
Wash - 2 bucket method w/ GC soap
Wheels - White Wall cleaner (1:1)
Clay - LT at 1:1 and Mild detailer's clay
    Compound - D300 w/ compounding MF pad
    Polish - D301 w/ finishing MF pad
    Wax - Ultimate Wax Liquid
Door Jams - spot polish and UWL applied (sorry no pics)

    Interior -
Dash - APC (10:1) spot treatment + QID dress
Carpets - Dry brush and Vacuum
Seats - GC leather cleaner and conditioner

This car was quite fun to work on, but every panel was severely swirled and had many RIDS (though not so isolated). I started out with a test spot for my DA MF system. After 2 passes with the D300 I found I was getting 95+% correction with a slight haze. Followed that up with the D301 on a finishing pad which removed all the haze.

After working about half the car I found if I cut my work area to about half and recieve the same correction level with a single application of D300. This system really likes slow are speed and moderate to heavy pressure.

    On to the pics.
    Before:
    Not so bad, right?

    Let's look closer

The swirls continued throughout the rest of the car. They were lightest on the hood, roof and trunk.

    Exhaust was a mess

    Engine too

    Afters:

    Much Closer

Exhaust was much better but not perfect

    Engine got cleaned too

Thanks for looking. All comments welcome.

What was used on the tires and engine as a dressing?

Congratulations BS MXRacer! It looks great.

When you say slow is the answer, you mean slow arm speed, slow DA speed, or both ?
In the end you just used D300 and topped with UWL ? Or did you use D301 on the entire car ?

      Thanks!

He's talking about slow arm speed. The tool should be set to 4800opm for defect correction with D300/DMC5, but if you find you need more cut then rather than increase the speed setting on the tool just move slower over the paint, or increase pressure, or some combination of the two.

BS MXRacer, that is outstanding work and should help those who've been challenged by Audi paint with a D/A - this new system loves hard paint!!

The Engine got UP to give it a little longer lasting shine and not attract dust.
Tire dressing is something my family has used for years called I-10.

Thank you! Mike's answer about speed was correct. Tool was left on speed 5 (1st gen PC). I used the D301/finishing pad on the whole car, removed the haze from D300/cutting pad nicely.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate it. Having never done an Audi or used the system I was a little nervous at first, having heard of Audi's frequent hard paint, but it performed great and made the job easy (though still plenty time consuming).

Thanks to you and Mike, I got it now. So the contrary also applies, if you find the paint to be too soft you would increase your arm speed and lighten the pressure, right ?!

How did you apply Ultimate Protectant on the engine ?

            Thanks one more time !

It looks like there is a straight line across the hood in the after picture about 1/4 way up from the front of the car, what is it? or am I seeing things?

If the paint was soft I would probably try to correct with just the D301/finishing pad first. If that wasn't getting the job done then the D300/cutting pad at a faster arm speed, and light pressure while also working a larger 2' x 2' area would be my next try.

I only have the lotion version of UP, which I applied with an MF applicator using very little liquid and lots of rub in of the product.

If you're referring to this picture and the line in the middle of the hood that is a clear bra line. Kind of changes the reflection and the texture of the finish in the photo.

Ahh I was kinda figuring it might be a clear bra, but I didn't see you mention it before...

                              The Audi looks absolutely fantastic.

                              Great job.
