  • Detail: LT1 Camaro

This car was brought to me after speaking to the owner on a local forum and him not really sure what I could do with it as it had some problem spots. The back portion of the car was pretty bad and definitely showed its age. The car is not 100% perfect but definitely a night and day difference. Also, the front half of the car was painted recently and had minor swirling along with some light marring from washing.

-Car washed with Meguiars hyper wash using two bucket method with grit guards.
-Wheel wells and barrels were cleaned with APC.
-Wheels were hit with Meguiars wheel brightener.
-Entire car was clay barred using Clay Magic’s blue clay
-Various sections required using Lake Country’s purple hybrid foamed wool pad, along with an orange, black, white, and blue finishing pad.
-Meguiars M105 & M205 were used to correct the finish on the paint.
-Menzerna SIP was used on the B-pillar as it finished down a little better to my liking.
-Polished and sealed using ShowroomFX blazin maize & crystal black.
    -All rubber dressed with ShowroomFX.
-All trim/wheel wells dressed using Meguiars natural finish.

    Now for some pictures.

The front half of the car had been repainted by the owners friend. The hood scoops were left wetsanded with out being polished. This is how I received it and there were some HEAVY sanding marks on the vents along with the entire hood but the owner was aware.

After a Purple LC pad with M105 followed by M105 with an Orange LC pad followed by M205 on a black LC pad:

The owner didn't request the oxidation to be removed but I don't like putting out work that doesn't "look" like I didn't do anything so I went the extra mile for him and took care of it. Not 100% but he was ecstatic when arriving for pick up.

    Questions/Comments are welcome.

    Thanks for taking a look.

Looks good! Not much you can do with the bumper, you can see the owner has backed into stuff or been rear-ended a bit, the paint is all cracked where it flexed from the impact.

      Thanks.

I made him aware of the stress cracks in the clear. This actually bid him some time to enjoy his car for a while longer before deciding on getting the entire thing painted.

          Wow, what a turnaround

          Those 50/50 shots are amazing!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Brian, what a great job. I'm jealous, as I'm working on a Camaro too. I must say you've done a great job. You've done a great job bringing the air scoops back to life.

Your photos brought to light some areas I'm having trouble or will have trouble. Those little triangles by the pillars are going to be bear to polish up, especially the ones by the mirrors. Speaking of the mirrors, I decided to use the buffer on them yesterday and my pad turned black as night. Your comment about oxidation of the rear bumper made me wonder if having the exhaust tips being tucked so far under the car doesn't create problems. On both sides of the rear bumper, the bumper was pitted and discolored. At first, I thought it was only on one side and looked and felt like yellow traffic line paint. Now I'm not sure what it was/is after your comments.

            Again, great job.

David, thanks for the kind words!

Regarding the triangle pieces - these are a troublesome area for MANY F-bodies. These are usually the first pieces to see a lot of neglect and the easiest to induce marring in to. Luckily, they respond very well to polishing. I personally own a Trans Am and for mine, I can get away with a polish to bring back that brilliant shine. When I notice they are starting to dull, I usually hit them with some M205 on a black or white LC pad(depending on how they are) or Menzerna SIP and it finishes down very nicely. My car also has true duals on it that are dumped at the axle and I have not experienced such problems... only the rear bumper getting the worst of embedded contaminents.

As for the mirrors - I've never had a problem with paint transfer as you mentioned until this particular car. I have quite a few pads so I cleaned my primary and went to an older pad but noticed it wasn't paint, just a thick layer of grime the clay bar didn't even pick up. Very weird as I've never experienced that before.

Now for the oxidation - The owner informed me the car had been down for approximately 2~ years for various reasons. So it sat outside for extended periods of time with no attention in the Texas sun with the occasional 6 month wash after it got bad. The panel behind the rear wheels were also pitted but that could be due to being his "toy" and taking it to the track and having hot rubber being laid back there.

              I hope this helps.

                Re: Detail: LT1 Camaro

Thanks for the pointers. I going to start the hood today. The owner grabbed a clay bar and started in on a couple of locations. Unfortunately the clay bar was contaminated so there are some spots of parallel lines an 1/8" apart and then some random scratches from a large chunk of debris in the clay.

I thought the transfer from the mirrors was unusual too, but my experience is pretty limited and I guess I should expect anything. At least the scratches and swirls on the mirror were easily removed with M205.

                Thanks again.

Thats a VERY common issue with Bumpers on 4th gen Fbodies. Some Spider for no reason. Has nothing to do with getting hit. They got better as the years went on but still very common.
